Geology Picture of the Week, May 18-24, 2008: Mount Adams and Adams Glacier

I've been to the Pacific NW a few times, and Mount Adams has always fascinated me. It's very prominent from Mount Saint Helens, and the face of the mountain is dominated by a deep opening which harbors Adams Glacier. The funny thing is, very few pictures of the mountain give a good impression of the side with the glacier. Anyway, here's a couple views of it. I didn't realized that Mount Adams is the second-highest peak in Washington State after Rainier.

Adams Glacier

This one shows it, but it's lower resolution that I would like.

This one is pretty good. Click for full-size.

Sort of the ugly stepdaughter: Lumpy on the left side, a gouged-out “hole” - old blown-out side crater maybe?) on the right.

Not a well-known mountain.

Not a well-known mountain.

I know! But it's hard to miss from Mount St. Helens:

This is from the rim of St. Helens (a place I've never been), but you can see Mt. Adams quite readily from the Visitor Center, a place I've been to twice, once before it was built and once after.

I’ve seen Mount Adams from Mount Saint Helens also, but how the heck do you get over to it? Is it forest service roads only?

I don't remember it from our visit to the Mt St Helen's visitor center. (Either I wasn't looking, or somebody moved the mountain on that day ....)

Coming south from Seattle down past the mountains from the east side, I remember how subtle the long slow rise was up the old volcano towards Crater Lake. You couldn't really tell how far up you'd risen, how big the volcano that blew up to create Crater Lake was until you got to the first view down into the lake.

Nasty country back there compared to the coast road: lava flows, scars, rocks, canyons and sudden drops. Very dry.

Sorry, no idea. I just did Google maps and it sure looks like forest service roads are the only way there.

Confirmed. Climbing Mount Adams (source of the third image)

"Forest Service road 8040 to the Cold Springs campground". Apparently there's a ranger station at Trout Lake that has information.
