Jacoby Ellsbury made a diving catch in the 4th inning in center field to save the no-no.

Lester throws a no hitter

Skankees are 6.5 games back and in LAST PLACE.

Great performance tonight by Lester. Only 2 walks, 9Ks and finished of the last hitter on a 95 mph fastball.

Schilling took one into the 9th inning last year. With 2 outs he shook off his catcher and then watched a high outside fastball go zipping by into right field.

This is good reason why I think the Red Sox will likely win the AL East going away by late summer (barring injury) and they will become prohibitive favorites to win the World Series.

Look at all the advantages the Red Sox have now:

1) Two superb power hitters in Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz.
2) A young and excellent pitching staff.
3) A lot of young players that are making major contributions to the team.

In the post-steroid era, the emphasis on young players and strong pitching will ensure the Red Sox will remain strong for years to come.

Unless you area a Kansas City Royals fan, as I am.

Kudos to Lester for his miracle and to the Sox for their win.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer kid - and I’m a diehard Yankee fan. Congrats, Mr. Lester!

Why didn't you call me?

Can you put me on the no-hitter in the 7th ping list please?

Red Sox staff...two no hitters in the last two years by pitchers under 25. Enough to make Yank-off fans cringe.

Yep. And the Red Sox are currently 6.5 games ahead of the Yankees...

I work nights at a post office and heard it on the radio.
Great! Especially since his future seemed uncertain
due to non-Hodgkins lymphoma not all that long ago.

Heard on radio:
—Varitek is the only catcher to catch 4 no hitters
(Lowe, Nomo, and Buckholz were the other pitchers)
—18th no-no in Sox history; only the Dodgers have more

The night Buckholz threw his no-hitter was the Saturday of
Labor Day weekend. I was watching a minor league game in
New Britain, CT (Rock Cats) and kept checking on the
Sox on the radio; heard about impending no-hitter. They
mentioned it on the loudspeaker, etc., and I was tuning in
and heard Buckholz get the final out etc

I remember that. Gotta love these young redsox arms.
If Dan Duquette was still the GM, he would have traded both of them away to get Dante Bischette because he wanted a bat that could come off the bench and strike out in an orderly fashion and then complain he was under paid!

They were going through the list of pitchers never to have a no-hitter. The list is a whos who of pitching.
Also, the Mets have never had a no hitter.
And Pedro isn’t going to give them one!

The Skanks are only 6.5 back BUT their pitching is horrible.
Their bats will pick up again and win them some games but their starters are awful.

I will be happy when they are dead and buried at about 15 games back in August.

Hughes and Kennedy are simply not ready for the big time. Neither has much experience and with all of the injuries that Hughes has dealt with he’s lost almost a full season of pitching development time.

Wong and the Schnozz are fine in a rotation but banking on Mussina, Igawa and whoever else they can throw out there is not the answer. Chamberlain can’t just step into the rotation either since you have to give him time to build up endurance to go 6-7 innings and then there’s the other side to it that you can’t let him throw more than 160-170 innings in a year anyway given his age.

As much as I want the Sox to win I would not be upset if Tampa wins. It will make Tank’s head explode!

If Joba could become a starter, he would be impressive I think.
Mussina is a stiff and getting older, Petite is getting older but still a solid starter and I am still not sold on Wong in big games.
The Skanks have sold their souls and it is finally time to payback the devil.

I am not sold on him as a starter. That 100 mph fastball is hard to throw 65-70 times a game. His arm motion is also very fast and I can see shoulder issues coming his way. I see him as Rivera’s successor and that’s a big deal since a top closer is worth several wins a year for a team. They don’t have enough guys that can take them 7 innings right now. Get them to Chamberlain and Rivera and that’s a really hard combo to beat.
