And I installed it early last week on two computers and havent had a problem. I must be special. I don't think so. I think it is a minority problem but the thing to learn from this is to BACKUP data before upgrading.

I must be special. No. Just normal. This is just some Windows F.U.D. that is getting to be tiresome.
I've imaged then applied SP3 to four separate machines of completely different hardware and somewhat different OS configs and have had no problems whatsoever with SP3.
The only hiccup so far is the inability of Automatic Updates to complete the process...but I think that was because the two machines I tried it on were without the WGA crap that needed to be added first.

Actually, I will say this;
The most annoying thing so far is that IE6 gets reinstalled thereby hosing all your bookmarks and Windows Media Player 9 gets installed, whether you have WMP0 or WMP11 installed or not.
Fortunately I have copies of the WMP10 and WMP11 executables handy.
