The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Well, we know Lil’ is brilliant.

Looks like folks at the McCain camp might be as well. Here’s hoping 1) that they do this well and 2) after he’s elected he cleans house at the RNC and installs his campaign staff...

*shakes head* SirKit told me that this morning. Other than her daughter having a pudge, (and frankly, with the styles of clothes girls are wearing today, how many DON'T have a pudge?) what proof are they offering?

Oh, that's right, they're so self-righteous, they don't NEED proof, because the accusation is enough. Bastiges.

I have the solution for the Convention vs. Storm thing: Turn the convention into a telethon of sorts. Have people call in and pledge money, tag the request onto the end of every speech, then send it all to the charitable groups that will go in after the storm and help clean up. Show the compassionate principles in action.

ROTFL!! The libs would need duct tape to keep their pin heads from exploding!

They’re just jealous that their veep pick is so dull.

Even if he DOES have 64 artificially whitened teeth. ;o)

Oh and there's more. Now they're saying that the son going off to Iraq was born 8 months after they eloped. I think they think that will cause concern with the evangelicals.

Maybe 50 years ago. But not anymore.

IF that turns out to be the case, she'll be applauded for choosing life TWICE.

It's fascinating. Palin and the fact that the RNC is actually modifying things because of the hurricane has the left going absolutely bat-$#!t crazy.

Truly, I think their problem is that they are spitting MAD because they're looking at their 'historical Presidency' fall by the wayside. They know that McCain and Palin can win, and being the Veep will set Palin up to be the first woman President.

The Dems have long touted themselves to be the 'progressive' party that would bring about momentous changes in American politics, and it just GALLS them that the old fart McCain has blown that opportunity out of the water.

I would imagine that you wouldn't want to fire these out of the SASS unless it was absolutely necessary.

The SASS will live on a diet of luxury match-grade ammo only. The M1A will be happy with whatever it's fed.

Now the SASS is not set up as a match rifle. It still has standard SAAMI chamber dimensions and freebore. Minimum chamber and zero freebore means you have to think long and carefully about every round you put in it, and can vouch for the round's dimensional pedigree.

I figured! I've also got a very accurate and NICE rifle that I'm careful about what I feed it!

I'm curious about the SASS.... is it possible to seat out bullets for accuracy ("almost" engaging lands) and STILL have them fit into the magazine of the SASS? Also, what's the twist rate of the barrel? I'm going to "guess" that it's a 1:10". :-)

Good guess, it's 1:10.

I'm not sure what the maximum cartridge length could be, but it still has to feed through the magazine with enough space left for dimensional tolerances. I'm sure custom rifle makers make clients sign a waiver that they're buying something with minimum dimensions all around, and accept sole responsibility for what they put in the chamber.

I notice that Smith Enterprises offers the M14 SASS with a 1:10 twist, chambered for the M118LR Special Ball round. Without having dimensional drawings in front of me, all I can guess is some dimensions are held about .0005 smaller, with smaller allowable deviation. They still have to guard against potential damage from max-dimension ball ammo used in it.

If push comes to shove, I'll ask some 240G gunner if I can feed my baby on a bit of his ball ammo.

I figured it was 1:10. That's very common and stabilizes bullets from "about" 130gr up to "about" 180gr, but you have to send them down the bore VERY fast (i.e. - MAX load!) at the heavier weights in order to stabilize! I'm not so sure I would subject an SASS to that sort of potential abuse! I know I wouldn't if it were mine! :-)

The reason I asked about free-bore, and cartridges fitting into the magazine is because of a common technique. It involves using a "marker" to determine the exact seating depth of a bullet to where the ogive JUST makes contact with the lands of the barrel outside the chamber. It's a way of minimizing free-bore and it gives the projectile VERY little chance of going off concentric before engaging with the lands and grooves. The big problem with this technique and "most" semi auto, box magazine fed rifles is that completed, custom seated ammo RARELY fits into the magazine! So you're left with very, VERY accurate ammo that won't fit into the magazine because the max overall cartridge length has been FAR exceeded!

I've read that semi autos can be built which lack enough freebore in order to custom seat ammo, and still allow the completed cartridge to fit into a magazine, but I can't recall having seen a stock rifle made this way. From what I've read, it's like this (from the factory) in order to digest a wide range of ammo. Having a cartridge slightly too long could "possibly" cause firing out of battery, and NOBODY wants to go through that! :-)

Our FAL is the same way...we can't seat bullets out far enough and still load the completed cartridges into the magazines. They sure were accurate though!...one at a time! :-)
