The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I’m watching the Cubs/Cards game and would be watching the Nationwide race but I couldn’t get the webcast to work.

I’ve been going through the Babylon 5 episodes and may start back up again after the game. Time to kick some vorlon butt.

We really enjoyed the Babylon 5 series. We didn’t watch it when it was on TV as a series. We watched them all from this past Christmas on, for several weeks, getting them from Netflix.

Good Morning ALL - around midnite the fireworks tapered off, it’s legal to shoot ‘em off intown thursday and friday, don’t know about today.

Hope everyone’s critters, both great and small, made it through the celebrations unscathed.

More sanding, staining, and sealing on tap for today. Beautiful weather for it.

I thought I might mow the lawn today...

...or not. The grass isn’t that tall.

We made it through OK - A few of the neighbors still had a lot but some were quiet, so I’d call it over all lighter than it’s been in past years. It was mostly over by 11 but a few neighbors still lit off more until after 1:30.

We spent from about 9:30 till a little after 11 out in the pasture with the horses, the dogs were in the house, mostly passed out.

In fact, we think Gidget was a little too passed out. She was difficult to wake up when we came back in. I don’t think we’ll give her two of the Ace again. She’s still drunk this morning.

Ouch... road rash. It looks like it hurt you worse than it hurt the rifle, but still. Sounds like it’s a joy to shoot.

I finally got back in the range last week too. Took my Kimbers. Felt good.

I know it’s probably farther than you’ll want to go... but Fry’s up in Renton has a huge selection.

I’m surprised by the lack of 4:3 too. I suppose it might be nice but I haven’t felt the drive to get a wide-screen. I suppose my next one probably will be though.

Actually, on attempt number 673 last night, it finally started up... it only took about 24 hours of trying. At least now, as long it never gets shut off again, I have time to shop around for a replacement. I’ll probably buy online, at Newegg or a place like such as.

How were the fireworks in Perfect Village? Over here it was pretty much continous all evening. Not that there is anything wrong with that. :-)

We’re glad to hear that, we remember that Samantha need her ‘tranquil puppy pills’ during the 4th of July and New Years. Sorry to hear that Gidget has a hangover.

My dog never liked the fireworks either, she’d go and hide under the bed.

I wonder who cornered the Dippity Doo market on Centauri Prime.

It’s kind of nice that Big Band and the jitterbug come back in style in 2260.

Tonight's Saturday Night Gun Pron [tm] features a couple of new products.

First, from ITW Military Products (maker of our Hobbit Hole safety carabiners) comes the "Fast Mag". This handy device lets you hang a single M16 magazine on Molle gear, giving secure, silent carry, and fast removal.

This device lets you carry a magazine up or down, with either end exposed for grasping. Except for magazine designs like the Lancer, which have "fat" floorplates, and can only be inserted bullets-first.

A bungee cord allows for some extra security. The whole rig is fast and silent, with soft plastic strips inside cushioning the magazine, and holding things in place. A wrist-band-style rubber band holds the two halves together, and can be placed in one of three grooves (or extra rubber bands added) if you want some real "grab". I was able to take the Lancer mag, as shown with the magazine pointing down, and shook the whole thing as hard as I could a couple dozen times. I felt the magazine move about 1/8 inch on the first shake, but no movement after that.

I found a stock photo of one user who had a rubber band on his mag carrier that had something in Arabic that probably was not very flattering the The Prophet. Too bad I can't find that image again.

Too bad they're not making this product sized for the M14 magazine. It shows real potential when you need just one more magazine real fast.

Since the Leupold scope for my DPMS SASS has a TMR (tactical milling reticle), I realize I need more practice in reading the reticle. I could always point the rifle out the window, and practice sighting on things, but people would probably feel uneasy about that.

So I decided to get the new Leupold Mark 4 10x50 tactical binocular with a TMR reticle. Now I can peek out the window with the binoculars (but not too much) without people freaking out.

As with most Leupold products, these binoculars are gorgeous. The image is great, the construction solid, and even the case has the nice touch of PALS loops to hang other stuff on. Retractable eye cups are also appreciated. I've resigned myself to the fact that center-focus binoculars are the wave of the future, even for heavy-duty use.

My only real complaint is that even their top-of-the-line binoculars come with a tiny "China" on the serial number plate. That's the little black strip on bottom side.

This is a quality product, and I was thrilled until I found that one little word (there's also a tiny "made in China" on the box to comply with truth-in-labeling). If it said "USA" (like the scope), I'd have been ecstatic. "Japan" would have been nice. "China" means I have to train myself not to dwell on it too much.

But they perform well, and have reminded me that I should upgrade my spotting scope with a new Leupold tactical model with matching reticle. I just won't hold up high hopes as to what the "made in" says.
