I think I read somewhere that the Milky Way is between 100,000 and 125,000 light years in diameter. If our galaxy is shaped like a pancake, how thick i.e. “top to bottom” is it?

It’s might be better to describe it as a pinwheel. I’d say it’s in the neighborhood of 15 or so lights years deep.
