We can hope our favorite movie will come away with the big prize, but in the long run, some of the best pictures ever made did not receive Best Picture Oscars. A good example would be the AFIs choice for number one movie of all time, Citizen Kane.

I’m with you on that. Best ever.
Good point—I see Titanic on your list of bad films that won Oscars—not only did it win undeservedly, but it beat out one of the best films of the last 20 years, L.A. Confidential, which deserved to win that year.
Gene Kelley allways made enjoyable films with the exception of "The Pirate'. We have them all in our library. My Mother-in-law, Wife and daughter are going to see the Jesus Christ Superstar fairwell performance tonight. We love musical theater in Pittsburgh. GK was from pittsburgh.
1939 was an amazing year. Basically, ALL of the nominees were deserving and would win going away in most other years. Other than those films, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ was the only “best picture” shoulda-been on the list.
I have avoided seeing Titanic.
Ever watch “Sahara” with Bogey?
‘Titanic’ is positively one of the greatest movies ever made.
Do see it. Wide screen, HD if possible.
I’ve seen enough of it, just not straight through. I think a Best Picture should transcend gender. Titanic is the ultimate “chick flick”.
Comedies get no respect. How about “A Shot in the Dark” with Peter Sellers?
The accents and phrases are so overdone by the Hollywood idiots that it makes the movie funny as hell.
It's a subtle comedy.
Shawshank Redemption
North by Northwest
Psycho
Vertigo
Saving Private Ryan
No, you are not. "Gump" was a horrible waste of my time. As much as I dislike Robbins, TSR was an excellent film.
Fargo and Shawshank are two of the movies we always stop and watch on tv even though we have it on dvd...along with "Raising Arizona" and "Jaws" and any of the "Godfathers" or "Rings"....and of course "Hoosiers" and one that I like a lot "Breaking Away".....
I doint see much that’s shocking on that list.
there is a long and ever growing list of movies and TV shows that I proudly can say I never watched....
also overrated were "Independence Day" " Pulp Fiction" and "The English Patient" ( so looonnng and so borring and such unlikable characters....)
And surrealistic as well. That scene where the one masked guy comes up to the sliding glass door and peers in, crowbar in hand, while the woman stares in wonder gave me a major WTF moment? The scene when one of the kidnappers comes in with a bleeding bullet hole in the jaw and says "You should see the other guy!" cracked me up. Steve Buscemi should have gotten an Oscar for that performance. You're right though, that the movie had many true-to-life scenes.
What also crossed my mind was the question that What If she had grabbed a gun instead of the telephone when she fled into the bathroom? Ergo, no story as she would have shot the two perps and saved her life as well as all the others.
Titanic got 14 nominations, still IIRC the most ever. The only other film to get that many was “All About Eve”.
Davis should have won for that flick, she was robbed blind!
Thanks to all for taking the time to answer!
I wholeheartedly agree with Glory.
I would add:
Apollo 13
L.A. Confidential
Fellowship of the Ring (I would argue that the first installment of the trilogy makes more sense as a Best Picture than the last installment, as the latter is so dependent upon what’s gone before)
