Hot dog vendor jailed for offering bacon (illegal bacon dog)
Reason Magazine - linked through WorldNetDaily ^ | April 24, 2008

Amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Los Angeles, there exists another world, an underground world of illicit trade in-not drugs or sex-but bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Street vendors may sell you an illegal bacon dog, but hardly anyone will talk about it, for fear of being hassled, shut down or worse. Our camera caught it on tape. One minute bacon dogs are sold in plain view, the next minute cops have confiscated carts, and ordered the dogs dumped into the trash.

Elizabeth Palacios is one of the few vendors willing to speak publicly. "Doing bacon is illegal," she explains. Problem is customers love bacon, and Palacios says she loses business if she doesn't give them the bacon they demand. "Bacon is a potentially hazardous food," says Terrence Powell of the LA County Health Department. Continue selling bacon dogs without county-approved equipment and you risk fines and jail time.

Palacios knows all about that. She spent 45 days in the slammer for selling bacon dogs, and with the lost time from work, fines, and attorney's fees, she fears she might lose the house that bacon dogs helped buy. She must provide for her family, but remains trapped between government regulations and consumer demand. Customers don't care about safety codes, says Palacios. "They just want the bacon."

In "Food Fight: Battle of the Bacon Dogs," reason.tv host Drew Carey takes a long look at the human cost of trying to prohibit trade in oh-so-tasty treats.

Why not mention the “no bacon”law in all those obnoxious ads begging people to move to CA?

What ads? I would be interested in seeing this. Gotta link?

Thanks! TLI

You've never seen them? They are full of celebrates selling you on how great life is in CA. They're on the Discovery Channel often.

You can probably find them on google.

You’ve never seen the ads about how “People think California is all fun and games, but really we do a lot of work” and then they show people playing golf, surfing, skating etc.?

I have not had cable in about 6 months, I wanted to see how the HD channels thing was going to go. It’s looking like Dish Network is pulling ahead...

Hmmmm! I wonder if the Islamic fetish against pork has anything to do with this ban on bacon.

Is there anyone with information about the hazardous nature of bacon? If I am not mistaken, bacon is the next thing to beef jerky when it comes to preserved meat.

Bacon — isn’t it preserved beyond all reasonable means and then some? Aren’t preservatives to PRESERVE? So, hot dogs are ok but not bacon? yegad, only in LA. But of course, we also welcome criminal gang member illegals. You’d never spend 45 days in jail for being that.

The cops must be morons. Let these people make a living already! My guess is that local restaurants are giving campaign contributions to members of the city council, and then pressuring these city council members to have the police shut down their competition.

Meanwhile, LA has 80,000 violent gangbangers, huge numbers of illegal aliens, drug dealers, rapists, bank robbers, etc., but someone cooking up some bacon in order to make a meager living for themselves and their family is public enemy # 1? Idiots.

Throwing a person in jail for hard work sounds counter-intuitive. The politicians complain about lost revenues. Yet they jail people who pay the taxes and no wonder California has a $16 billion budget deficit.

I don't know how you do it. TV has become so luxurious. Watching movies from the 1940’s, lacrosse games, travel shows, surfing shows from Australia, Discovery and History channel, a great mini series on John Adams. It's amazing what's available now. The freedom is exciting

On second thought it's tourism commercial. Here's one...

LA city government is typical of left wing controlled cities in California and around the world. Their cities are going to hell under their watch, and they do nothing to stop the downward fall into the abyss. Instead they do stuff like this, banning bacon from hot dogs.

Under left wing leadership LA is now a third world city:

Los Angeles Is a Third World City

A third of immigrants have not graduated from high school and 60 percent do not speak English fluently, the Migration Policy Institute found. These immigrants make up half the Los Angeles workforce. It said this left immigrants ill-equipped to fill California’s fastest-growing occupations. The organization said that as the so-called baby boomers reach retirement age, a similar pattern will spread across the U.S. Ernesto Cortes, of the Industrial Area Foundation, a think-tank that specializes on social change said “The question is are we going to be a 21st century city or a Third World city with an elite group on top and most of the city on near poverty wages?” The U.S. Census Bureau last year predicted that by 2050, minorities will account for half the residents across America. In 2000, according to the Census Bureau, whites were in a minority in 262 counties, up from 183 in 1990. Nationally, the number of minorities topped 100 million for the first time in 2006.

I don’t get it. If they’re starting with the raw product I could see it but with the many varieties of precooked bacon around, what’s the problem?
