Remember - just a little over a decade back, Apple DID turn lose of the hardware part - licensing the OS to 3rd party makers. The lesson learned by Apple - it nearly killed them.

A crippled edition was released to third parties, and only those who would only make Apple clones - bad bios chips, bad copies of the OS, it was a disaster by Apple's own choice, and people continue to buy the koolaid that only Apple can make an Apple.

Please provide proof of these “bad bios” chips and “bad copies of the OS.”

Considering that I spoke with the then-head of PowerComputing repeatedly at the time, I find this hard to believe.

Crippled? You must have some info I never heard. I knew some folks with clones (Starmax for one). Having played around with their machines vs. the one I owned at the time (a Genuine Apple), I never noticed any difference at all. In fact, the Starmax machine was approximately the same speed, but seems a bit quicker.

So I’m not sure what might have been “crippled”. As I said - I found zero differences at the time... but that has been quite a few years ago.
