Plane clips truck on landing at Unalaska

A commercial airplane clipped a truck on landing at the Unalaska airport Wednesday, causing minor injuries to some people aboard, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the city's public safety department.

Nine people were aboard the Peninsula Airways G-21 Grumman Goose -- flying in from Akutan -- as it came in for its final approach about 4:30 p.m., said Unalaska Sgt. Jennifer Shockley. As it came in, its wheel touched the roof of a truck crossing one end of the runway and the plane tumbled onto the pavement.

They are blaming a malfunctioning gate for the incident. I guess "look both ways" has lost it's meaning.

The aircraft is valued at about $500,000, and damage to it was still being assessed, he said.

There ain't now way that aircraft ever flies again. What a shame to lose a classic like that.

I think I’m gonna cry. That’s a 65-year-old classic sitting wrecked right there. Built like every other Grumman—a tank with wings, and that’s probably what helped save the passengers from worse injury.

You know you’ve got an old airplane when your registration is only three numbers! (N741)

"It hadn't been fixed initially because of parts, but at this time we have no intention of fixing it because we plan to relocate it to a safer location," he said. Wetherell said he didn't know when the gate was scheduled to be relocated or where it will be placed.

Sounds like someone is trying a CYA.

It could very well fly again.

The Goose recently restored in Ketchikan was goundlooped and the center section was quite warped, but it is or will soon be airworthy (though N-88821 will never fly again).

The real question is who needs and can afford it's unique capabilities.

(The nose is a baggage compartment and a photographer can take some interesting inflight photos riding there)
