Ladies and gents,
I have a problem. I've posted here for years, and I've let it slide until now. I should have asked these questions before, but I was too lazy/indifferent to bother. Anyway, it's gotten to the point where I can't take it anymore. I can't post pictures. I can't italicize the text that I want to respond to. I can't post links. I can't post text in different colors or fonts. I've tried tinkering with the settings on Free Republic. I've tried tinkering with my web browser. Can someone out there give me an idiot-proof explaination of what I can do to remedy this problem. I'll be forever greatful. Heck, I may even send a small donation to FR in your name. Just...please...help me.

I still can't get the magic to work. I put the below text in the brackets...but no picture.

So what is wrong here?

I still can't get the magic to work
That link you provide is to a web page, not to the image itself. If you want to display an image, you must provide the URL for the actual image file itself, not to the web page containing that image.
If you right click on the image and then left click on the "Properties" entry on the menu that comes up (this is on Firefox -- IE might vary a little) then you can see that the URL for the image itself is:
http://www.syvjoneshouse.com/UploadFiles/Alex&SpeakerNewt.jpg
To display that image, include the following in your post:
<img src=http://www.syvjoneshouse.com/UploadFiles/Alex&SpeakerNewt.jpg>
When you include the above in your post, it will display as the image:
If you right click on the image just above, you should be able to examine its Properties and see that it is indeed the image at the URL:

The = was missing.

Why can't we just get one of those little "browse" boxes they have on other sites?
To: Zevonismymuse
You have two slashes at the end of the URL and only need one. Plus, there should be no space between the < and the a, or between the close quote and the >. If, in the actual code, you do not have those spaces, then I bet that those two slashes are your problem.
Also, you need some object text for the link, and at the end of that the < /a >, in case you didn't have them.
Here's how it would look:
< a href="http://www.syvjoneshouse.com" > LINK TO SVJONES HOUSE< /a >
with this result:
LINK TO SVJONES HOUSE

Huh -- did you not see the space between the "img" and the "src" ?
Cut and paste the following into your reply. It will work.
