The true first episode of The Twilight Zone - The Time Element
various

On October 2, 1959, Rod Serling's landmark television series, The Twilight Zone debuted with the pilot episode, Where Is Everybody? However, this was actually the second pilot. The first pilot was an episode of the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse. The episode, written by Serling, was The Time Element. The original air date was November 24, 1958.

Unfortunately, the episode seldom appears on television these days. And it's not yet available on video in the US. However, a fellow from Portugal has uploaded it to YouTube. Here it is. I think it's very good. It's in six parts. You might want to download in case it gets yanked:

The Time Element - Part 1

The Time Element - Part 2

The Time Element - Part 3

The Time Element - Part 4

The Time Element - Part 5

The Time Element - Part 6

The show features several fine actors including William Bendix, Martin Balsam, and Jesse White. The Ensign is played by Darryl Hickman, older brother of Dwayne Hickman (Dobie Gillis). One of the guys at the bar is Joe DeRita, who was better known as Curly Joe, the last of The Three Stooges.

The pilot for the original series, The Untouchables was also shown on the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse.

At least the omission is excusable, given that it’s attached to a different series with different rights issues. In the inexcusable category of TVD releases are Universal’s time-compressed (for syndication) Night Gallery episodes of Season 1, and the unrestored Wanted: Dead or Alive episodes that are missing a minute of material (also due to the use of syndication masters).
