Time-Warner: Vodka Ad Campaign Reconquers California for Mexico (boycott Absolut Vodka!)
Newsbusters ^ | April 3, 2008 | Warner Todd Huston

Posted on 04/03/2008 9:17:15 AM PDT by DesScorp

Taking the Reconquista concept all the way to the end, Absolut Vodka launched an ad campaign that appears on billboards and at least one magazine that features a map of the western U.S. and Mexico with nearly the entire west coast appearing as a part of Mexico. This ad appears in Quien Magazine, which is owned by Time Warner and also appears on billboards in Mexico. Quien claims a "total audience" of 513,000 readers in Mexico and the southwestern U.S.

The map covers what used to be Mexico's claimed borders before our 1846 war with them from which the U.S. took possession of California, Texas, New Mexico, etc. But, the ad shows those states as part of Mexico with the "Estados Unidos De America" situated to the north and east of the "Absolut World" Mexico.

In a day when immigration issues are incendiary between our two countries, Time Warner accepting ads that stirs Mexico's sentiments to "take back" parts of the U.S. (as the term Reconquista means) as their own territory is quite extraordinary.

Boycott Absolut... they wouldn't run an ad like this in Greece and Turkey, or in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, or in India and Pakistan. This is a blatant insult to American consumers. Don't reward them with your dollars. Plenty of other Vodkas out there.

Not a bad trade.

The contents of my email...

Hi,

Just saw your “Reconquista” ad.

Is that what you guys support?

Be advised, all of the organizations that actually support America are going to be notified of you extremely offensive ad.

This will include all branches of the military, church organizations city and State Fire and police fraternities, college fraternities, State and National politicians and political organization, etc.

Just so you will know what to expect.

As for my suggestion? About a year or two of pro-America ad campaigns.

Thanks!

If everyone will please find and post (here) a couple of email addresses of such organizational contacts I will at leas send each one an email expressing just how offensive that ad is to me.

Thanks, TLI

Curious, makes you wonder; if it were left up to a vote in the Southwest and we voted to allow the reconquista........would the U.S. Federal gov’t put up a fight to stop it?

They would have to act pretty quick. If they fool around like they usually do it will be all over and the border will be back to Mexico City... again.

“”Quien (a spanish language magazine read my Mexican people) claims a “total audience” of 513,000 readers in Mexico and the southwestern U.S.”””

Its business. Surely it will offend alot of Americans. I don’t like it...but it is directed to a certain group of people. Others outside of this particular ad’s target audience that will never pick up that magazine will happen along and see it but the small number of people offended will not outweigh the pleased number of people that the ad was intended for.

I think its disgusting. But it was not meant for me to see it.

They would not get away with this ad in Alabama, its just business.

Remember when Conservatives had a sense of humor. I miss those days. Now half of Freerepublic gets their panties in a wad over every little slight.

So you’re just cool with the Reconquista movement and companies that support it, and you’re conservative? A conservative what? Mexican?

Web sites like this one and blogs make targeted marketing harder to hide than it was even 10 years ago. I do not know why they ran this ad; it may have been the free publicity, as Absolut vodka may not be consumed much by white male middle class conservatives and a big uproar may help sales with groups like homosexuals and assorted “alternative lifestyle” types. It is also possible that the marketing director may have his head firmly planted in the 1980s, when the MSM and the entertainment giants controlled virtually all news and entertainment media.

As I stated on another post, someone always shows up to apologize for idiocy.

Ok, I am in Texas and that is part of the southwest. They are suggesting I loose my part of the nation but hey, "it's just business?" It's ok here in Texas?

I don't think so.

Thats OK...But your are not supposed to be looking at that magazine.

The reason I say, its just business, is because for every one Texan like yourself, that saw that ad OUTSIDE of its intended market...there are 10 Mexicans who are pleased with it. Mexicans being the intended audience.

By definition, yes, that is business.

“But your are not supposed to be looking at that magazine.”

What kind of a silly statement is that?

In this world today and with the internet, there is no such thing as, “you aren’t supposed to see it.” They are deliberately encouraging a mind set that threatens a part of this country’s citizens and there welfare, and you say “you aren’t supposed to see that?” Gads, that is inane.

Yep....if conservatives make up a small part of their business, they could certainly sacrifice us and tick us off to boost their bigger bread and butter percentage.

Besides....I am a very stress-free person. I keep my life simple by not letting things like this get my blood pressure up.
Gosh, some people must stay tense as a knot all day long.

The ad. Not the message. The ad.
It wasn’t meant for you. It was meant for mexicans, thats why they put it in a mexican magazine.

I am talking about business and marketing here OK.

They would not have placed that ad in a conservative magazine.

Maybe I should have said “you were not intended to see it when they thought of the marketing group they were targeting”
