Briton to recreate first African circumnavigation
Mon 19 May 2008, 15:19 GMT
By Jeremy Lovell
http://africa.reuters.com/wire/news/usnL19251251.html
The boat is entirely wooden and has only one sail
The vessel was designed from archaeological evidence
Local boatmakers said they had never done anything like it before
I think the description of the author that the Phonecians had ‘flimsy wooden boats’ denigrates their boatbuilding and sailing skills.
By the way, someone is building a copy of a Greek boat found in the Danube marshes to recreate the Black sea voyage of Jason and the Argonauts. Maybe we’ve already posted it.
.....Local boatmakers said they had never done anything like it before.....
Because the boat originated in the Gulf and is a dhow?
Yup, it has been posted. There’s also a replica of a Minoan ship, and that’s posted somewhere. Hmm, maybe I’ve got the links in a file...

Wow!
Thanks for posting this. Very exciting.
Somewhere around here (probably in the earlier topics about ancient circumnavigation of Africa and whatnot) there’s stuff on Herodotus’ account of the clockwise CN of Africa, which was commissioned by a pharaoh; also, stuff regarding the Periplus of Hanno, which pertains to Carthaginian exploration of the western coast of Africa at least as far south as Mount Cameroon.
