The Weekend YouTube Music Video Thread

Today in music history

Alan Freed, the American D.J. who coined the term “rock and roll”, had his 1952 Rock ’n’ Roll Stage Show at a local arena cancelled when 30000 fans overcrowded the venue. Fire regulations allowed only 10000.

The Guess Who released their biggest hit, “American Woman,” this week in 1970. Randy Bachman left the band four months later because of religious conflicts with the rock and roll lifestyle. Burton Cummings carried the band until 1975.

Bob Dylan’s song, “Hurricane,” caused enough publicity to get Rubin “Hurricane” Carter released from jail in 1976. The song promoted Carter’s innocence and is from the 1975 album, Desire.

Strawberry Fields, an area in Central Park bought by Yoko Ono in memory of her late husband was opened in 1984.

I've one for you.

"No Sleep Till Brooklyn"

License To Ill was one of the best albums from the 80s, IMO.

Oh yeah. I was in sixth grade. This was my favorite from that album:

The Beastie Boys - Hold It Now, Hit It

Used to watch it in church every week. LOL.

I forgot that was him who sang the theme song for it. Good song and I still love the movie.

I found this live version of "Brass Monkey" and it's better than the original video.

Thanks. I didn't know about that one. This is the best instrumental BB song I've ever heard. They did it on SNL back in '94.

You might think it's boring, though. It's got a good groove, but goes a little too long.

Let's hear it for some lesser known UK new wavers. Here's a couple;

Feargal Sharkey ( former lead singer of The Undertones )
“A Good Heart” ( 1985 )

Kirsty MacColl
“Terry” ( 1983 )

MacColl also wrote this one familiar to almost all early music video fans. Ullman couldn't hit the high “Baby” in this song so MacColl sings the one word.

Tracey Ullman
“They Don't Know” ( 1983 )( w/guest appearance by a very famous person )

Yep, that’s another classic. Too bad they didn’t last all that long (at least from a popularity standpoint). They were kind of underground before they hooked up with Aerosmith for “Walk This Way.” Seems none of their follow-up LPs did as well as the one which came out in ‘86.

Yes, that is the one. Something offbeat, I like it. Also mentions: Gwen Stefani featuring Pharrell: Can I have it like that and Yummy, anything by Paul Van Dyk, Chemical Brothers: Block Rockin Beats, all slamming tunes./Just Asking - seoul62......

Good one. Nice and catchy and doesn’t sound cheesy 20 years later, like a lot of songs from that era. Sleep well.
