Today in music history

Alan Freed, the American D.J. who coined the term “rock and roll”, had his 1952 Rock ’n’ Roll Stage Show at a local arena cancelled when 30000 fans overcrowded the venue. Fire regulations allowed only 10000.

The Guess Who released their biggest hit, “American Woman,” this week in 1970. Randy Bachman left the band four months later because of religious conflicts with the rock and roll lifestyle. Burton Cummings carried the band until 1975.

Bob Dylan’s song, “Hurricane,” caused enough publicity to get Rubin “Hurricane” Carter released from jail in 1976. The song promoted Carter’s innocence and is from the 1975 album, Desire.

Strawberry Fields, an area in Central Park bought by Yoko Ono in memory of her late husband was opened in 1984.

The re-recorded that track for the “The Return of the Manticore” box set. IIRC that track was presented in Dolby Surround Sound. “Pictures at an Exhibition” was for sure, and sounds awesome on a good system! The floor falls out from underneath your feet with the depth of the low organ hum.

I do agree that John and Yoko were probably soul mates and I do think they loved each other; their marriage and partnership lasted a long time, right up until John was murdered. I don’t think that Yoko has ever remarried.

Paul and Linda’s marriage was also a great love story and their marriage lasted almost 30 years – very unusual now days especially for people in the entertainment industry. And from what I understand, they had a pretty normal and low key home life and managed to raise some pretty normal, happy and now independently successful children. Too bad Sir Paul didn’t listen to his children when they tried to warn him that Heather Mills was bad news. It’s also too bad that they had a child together that the Gold Digger will use as a pawn and meal ticket as long as she can. I guess Paul, with all his money and fame, is just a guy; he was lonely and easily taken advantage of.

Just as I figured! I was in basic in March of 1975 and turned 21 two weeks after I got there. Small world ain't it!

I agree with you about John and Yoko and Linda and Paul. Paul was definitely looking for another Linda and got taken advantage of. Good thing the British courts only gave her 25 million.

I forgot about Paul and Linda. Do you know she was an usher at Fillmore east when she and Paul met? I think I got that from ‘Circus magazine’, of which I was one of its few subscribers before it went under (right after the deaths of Joplin, Hendrix & Morrison).

What Branch? I ended up with the BlackHawks 2/1 Cav, the most decorated Cav Unit in the US Army :-)
The 2/1 Cav was deactivated in December 1995 at Ft Hood, Texas when the 2nd Armored Division stood-down.

Out of what became Crosby Stills Nash and (sometimes) Young, I liked best Stephen Stills and Neil Young as the real musicians in that group.

USAF - Lackland AFB Texas. I was fixed facility Tech Controller 30770. Six month tech school at Keesler AFB - Biloxi, MS, and then three great duty stations:
Lajes Field - Azores, Portugal; MacDill AFB - Tampa, FL; and McClellan AFB - Sacramento, CA (closed in 2001 through BRAC).

Actually I understood that she was working as a photographer when she met Paul having already photographed the likes of the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, Simon and Garfunkel, The Who, and The Doors and was a regular and well established photographer at the Fillmore and didn’t meet him there but in London on an assignment.

A number of people assume that since she was a photographer and her maiden name was Eastman, that she was an heiress to the Eastman Kodak fortune. But she was no relation to that family although through her mother, she was an heiress to the Lindner Department Store.

Really? I remember buying Circus in the late 70’s so I think they out lived Joplin, Hendrix & Morrison by more at least a decade.

I think the original Circus magazine went under & then it was resurrected. They documented the deaths of Hendrix then Joplin, IIRC, and after that I lost track of them.

Some of the founders of The BlackHawk, 1st Cavalry Regiment, were the famous Lieutenant Colonel Kearny, "father of the United States Cavalry" (later Major General), Capt. Nathan Boone, Daniel Boone's son and Lt. Jefferson Davis, later of the CSA.

The Air Force hasn't been around long enough to have many noted units.

Bill Rinehart

Bill Rinehart was a guitarist with the Leaves, an LA band that, like early Love, straddled folk-rock and garage band proto-punk. Guitarist Rinehart co-wrote their first single, “Too Many People,” a minor hit in the LA area. The Leaves’ big single was “Hey Joe,” which they learned from hearing the Byrds do it live. They released two versions of the song that failed to hit. Then the band released a third version, recorded after Rinehart’s departure with his replacement Bob Arlen. This rendition hit the US Top 40 in June 1966.
To hear “Hey Joe,” seek out Nuggets Volume One: The Hits (Rhino, 1984). To hear “Too Many People,” look for Nuggets Volume Two: Punk (Rhino, 1984).
After his departure from the Leaves, Rinehart joined the first incarnation of the Gene Clark Group in the spring of 1966. He also played on Clark’s first solo LP, Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers (Columbia, 1967).

Yoko most definitely pursued John. Even better here is what a Japanese guy told me back then-—

Yoko comes from a prominent Japanese family that’s in banking. She was the ugly duckling who was rejected because she was hairy and ugly. Quite hairy for a Japanese woman. In some photos her her face looks monkey-ish

Japanese men were spooked by her body hair and lack of femininity so she came to America which she also wanted to do because she art aspirations that were kooky and beatnik. This was also un-Japanese

So she came here, did some beatnik art installations, pursued John

And the rest is history

Linda MacCartney

Linda's last name is Eastman and her father was in the music business. AS an attorney I believe. That's how Linda got her entrée as a photographer for the pop scene

Plus I believe her dad was Jewish, not her mother
Her brother also was in the muscic biz IIRC
