When I Think Romance, I Think... Afghanistan?
The Prometheus Institute ^ | 3/15/2008 | Matt Fay

During a briefing, Thursday, regarding the progress of the war in Afghanistan President Bush made an interesting confession, “I must say I’m a little envious think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed. It must be exciting for you…in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know..."

There things that are Romantic besides being with a women......like Gladiators fighting to death.....like Spartans making a Stand......that’s what W had in mind......

Liberal morons obviously found a way to twist his words....

He was paying a compliment how COOL it is to be at the front lines and battling the enemy.....good vs evil.....what all epics are written about......very Romantic.

I’ve been there. Glad I went, but it wasn’t romantic.

My Dad was in 3 wars, and died in the third. He made it very clear there was nothing romantic about combat.

Man George isn't doing himself any favors with remarks like these.

He should stick to lying about the recession that isn't going to happen.

Or maybe he could get the details of the Bear Stearns Bailout out to the public

What W was alluding to is what is depicted in movies like ‘Patton’ and ‘Master and Commander - Far side of the World’.

Taken in context, it’s pretty clear he meant romance as in the classical meaning. That being adventure, defending the chivalric ideal and such.

But of course, in modern parlance, all romance has to do with is who’s sticking what into whom in a sexually explicit manner. And all idealism is foolishness and jingoistic.

A quote like this makes me wonder what First Lady Laura Bush received as a Valentine’s Day gift last month…..a gift basket full of grenades perhaps?

Here’s an Ides of March gift for Mr. Fay:

romantic ... 4 : marked by the imaginative or emotional appeal of the heroic, adventurous, remote, mysterious, or idealized characteristics of things, places, people ...

— Webster’s III.

Yeah - Spartacus is one of the greates Movies ever made! So is ‘Patton’, ‘Thin Red Line’, ‘Stalingrad’.....to name a few.

I am not sure what your interest is in ‘naked grown men’, but those movies have lots of Warriors, how make War seem something better than it is......
