2008 Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

On the surface to a casual observer the 2008 Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame class appears to be fairly strong and rather non-controversial. Three of the five artists being enshrined in the main performer category are very well deserving, including one of the most dominant artists in rock history. They also have seen fit to give overdue recognition to some long eligible figures in other categories and so on the whole this year's inductees are a solid group deserving of their honors.

That was cool. Their amplifiers (which were unrecognizable to me) looked like monoliths.

“...inducting Madonna is an absolute joke...”

In a way, I feel that it almost perfectly reflects the legitimacy of the place itself. Jann’s Record Collection in the flesh. Madonna is a Pop icon, not a musical one. And, as the RRHOF is an extension of Rolling Stone Magazine and the pop-ishness of that rag, it fits. They belong together.

G.U.P. to me was a fine record, even if Geddy detoured off the beaten path with that goofy Steinberger. Enemy Within is still a fine tune.

Bass Player did a cover with Geddy and had a good article within covering the S&A recording. Seems that the producer interviewed strongly for the job but didn’t let on that he was a big fan. When they began working, he had the guys dragging out all their old effects and re-listening to old materiel. Call it a revival, but it works!

I believe New World Man was their only top 40 song in the US.

Oh I don’t know. I think the popular thing is to put Mellencamp down as some pop star. If anything Mellencamp is over ridiculed.

I thought it was cool that Billie Joel correctly recognized the best steaks in the world are at a little hole in the wall in Bloomington, IN at Little Zagrabs.

Dave Clark 5 put out some kickbutt records.

18 appearances on Sullivan, 10 ten hits, a number one hit, and Dave Clark is one of the smartest men in music, kept all of his old publishing.

This is not slim pickens. This is quality rock n roll.

Sorry no country acts were admitted, after all it is the rock n roll hall of fame.

I am a big fan of the British Invasion music. They were a fantastic group. I met Mike Smith around 2001 or so when he was touring with his group.

He was a gentleman.

18 appearances on Ed Sullivan.
several top 20 hits.

They were no Archies. They played their own instruments and most of their hit songs are classics.

Agreed...Over and Over, Bits and Pieces, Catch us if You Can...they were the cream of the British invasion.

Most of the Freepers listen to country and little else apparently. Liking the British invasion is akin to enjoying Karl Marx on a guitar to most of them.

The Moody Blues, Yes, and Jethro Tull are two groups that Jan Wenner will prevent from getting in there as long as he is alive...he hates progressive rock and so far I think only Genesis and Pink Floyd have gotten into the Hall.

The Searchers hits that were big hits were only Needles and Pins and Bumble Bee.

The DC5 have had over 20 songs that reached the top 40, starting in 1964 and ending in 1967, well into the era of psychedelic rock.

I think the DC5 induction was made out of guilt because they were cheated out of induction in 2007 because Wenner demanded a rap group get in the Hall. Then two members died within a few months of each other. Wenner should burn in hell for omitting the DC5 in 2007 when all five members were alive to enjoy their triumph.

So, does Madonna still feel Like a Virgin?

Well, she's entirely insufferable. The worst part of the ceremony came when they had Iggy frikkin' Pop perform two of her songs. What unbelievable crap!

I got up and went to the restroom and did a few things. I had no interest in watching that freak perform.

It never ceases to amaze me how low they set the bar for the Rock ‘n’ Roll HOF.

I think it is more of a function of the golden age of rock-n-roll has past us. There are few new contributions to rock, so they accept anything as rock.

“I repeat: You know squat about rock ‘n roll.”

Yeah, yeah, very witty.

I will give you this: You mentioned the Animals. That was my favorite group of the BI and Chas Chandler my fave Animal.
Perhaps that’s because I, too, was playing bass in a band at the time, my senior year of college. (The fabulous “Screamin’ Jay and the Horrendous Grundoons”

Chas was a very successful producer, too. Jimi’s first album, “Are You Experienced?” Not too shabby. I think that might have been Chas’ first album as producer, also, come to think of it.
