On the surface to a casual observer the 2008 Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame class appears to be fairly strong and rather non-controversial. Three of the five artists being enshrined in the main performer category are very well deserving, including one of the most dominant artists in rock history. They also have seen fit to give overdue recognition to some long eligible figures in other categories and so on the whole this year's inductees are a solid group deserving of their honors.

Leonard Cohen
Madonna
John Mellencamp
The Ventures
slim pickins
About time The Ventures were inducted!! Looong overdue. Sad Mike Smith won’t be there for DC 5 induction. Madonna? Give me a break!
Should just be in the hall of sluts.
The Dave Clark Five???? Madonna???
You’ve gotta be kidding me.
They shouldn’t be allowed in if they don’t first do an “Unplugged” live program.
Madonna? Sheesh,,,,,the dumbing down of America continues.
John Mellencamp = overrated
Ain’t Madonna more pop, SlutPop to be exact than Rock n Roll?
The semi-obscure Leonard Cohen?
Madonna belongs in a Pop Music Hall of Fame. Rock and Roll is something else.
And Chubby Checker bypassed once again!
Let me guess: no Chicago.
Idiots.
Brad Delp of Boston.
Robert Plant
Bruce Springsteen
I don't care for Madonna ...But I would think if she got the honor she would at least sing. I wonder how much money she wanted to sing. IMO she shouldn't get the honor.
“Rock and Roll is something else.”
And, whatever it is, Leonard Cohen didn’t do it either.
Here's a link to a very early video, dating probably from 1969, of the Ventures out in the desert near Area 51, playing Hawaii 5-0:
The comments left by a poster named 'planetcheck,' (who may be one of the Ventures, or was at least on the film crew) are most interesting:

We filmed this in June 1969 on the outskirts of Groom Lake Nevada. We did the take 3 times. A SR 71 Blackbird jet flew into the background of the first 2 filmings and ruined the shoot. It was over 90 degrees when we filmed this video. Area 51 is 1 mile looking to the West.

Groom Lake? How the hell did you get the guys and all the equipment in there? You don't just call the tower and ask for landing instructions there!

All the equipment was trucked in within 3 days. Large portion of Groom Lake was off limits. We could see the huge SR 71 Blackbirds landing at Area 51 in the distance. They were captured on film in the first two takes and the shoots were redone. I believe those first two takes were better than this 3rd shoot shown here. It was very hot that day.
“Let me guess: no Chicago.”
No Rush, either. I guess prog-rock bands with an over 30-year history of selling albums and filling concerts with fans don’t rate induction, but an over-exposed pop-tart like Madonna does.
a little thin out there.....
.... the Ventures with a bullet.....
Cohen may be “semi-obscure” but he has had an enormous influence on two generations of songwriters. As a bonus, most of his songs promote conservative values by stealth- Google the lyrics to “The Future” and “Closing Time”.
