Thousands of people are using 30-06 with modern ammo and have no problem. The 30-06 was an early high pressure cartridge and was not really designed for black powder. NRA has many matches that use M1 Grand and modern 30-06 ammo with no problems with thousands of rounds fired. The M1 Garand is safe still. 30-40 Craig is safe with modern powders. 30-30 is safe with modern powders. The 30-06 has about 20% more power than the 308.

The 308 corresponded to a major advance in smokeless powder which came in 44; it didn’t need as much powder to get the same ballistics as the 06. What I was saying was that if you load that 30-06 case up full with modern propellants, it’s likely to generate more pressure than a Garand rifle was designed for.
