I always assumed it was a case of too little bathing, lye soap used on one's underware, or merely the Italian guys being their usual rude selves around women, now I learn the disgusting practice (also performed by most men from South of the Border as well as Hip Hop "artists") relates to some ancient superstitution.
The practice is still uncivilized and rude no matter how ancient.
