> Sounds like the guys were blowing off some steam. You know it’s funny.

I know it’s sick. And you are sick if you think it’s funny.

They want to blow off steam, ay... maybe they should tell it to their Sgt-Maj (or his Marines equivalent). I am convinced the Sgt-Maj can find them lots of productive ways to “blow off steam.”

> Freepers scream we support our troops and you dern well better support them too.

I support our Troops. I do not support animal abuse: particularly not dogs and particularly not perpetrated by our Troops, who should know better.

> But when something as dumb and silly as this shows up??? OFF WITH THEIR HEADS I wanna see Court Martials.

That would be “courts-martial”. And yes, if our Troops were involved in this incident I would like to see courts-martial handed out to all hands involved.

> Al Qaeda would being tossing LIVE HUMANS as in woman and children off bridges, or slashing them, or beheading them in a market places perhaps not to mention blowing them up not dogs. In that respect we are talking about human life which they do not value.

In your view, then, abusing puppies is OK because at least our Troops haven’t quite yet stooped to Al Qaeda’s level, ay. It’s OK for our Troops to pick on puppies because at least they aren’t picking on humans???

There is something bizarre and twisted with your logic. Please explain.

This stricks me as very odd, I think I recognise this soldier in another video. If I am correct, the video was a great one of these two soldiers stopping for some "PITA" bread and the Iraqi children gathering around. They were fun loving fellows and shouted "for the love if Allah hurry up" when the fellow was making the bread. Then they got the kids to saying... "Hillary sucks" and "Go Bush" ...

Hunting now for the video... but the mannerism of the guy shugging his shoulders is so very simular.. it just has to be them.

For every one of these types of stories, there must be hundreds of positive stories about encounters between our guys and animals. Dozens on FR alone. But what will get the media attention and public scrutiny? Folks, bad judgment and horrible behavior exist everywhere, even in the best environments.

I didn’t watch it. I’ve read enough abaout it hear on FR to not be certain if it was real or not. Even if not real, really not something they should be doing in uniform (or at all, actually, but definitely in uniform). Let’s see if the USMC is as understanding as you are. Somehow I doubt it. But wait, you can blame it on pressure from a bunch of PC pus——.

Well I guess in some of the eyes in here that would have been a lot better. It wasn’t a real bright thing to do but some people are over reacting big time. I like dogs. Heck I like cats too. But I have also dealt with a local animal control Nazi as well where some whackjob called in for leaving a dog in a well ventilated vehicle. It’s amazing how some Freepers support Liberal Causes.

Forget it. Some twits don't even recognize the job of a U.S. service member any more. Look at the articles in FR these days. Troops help build chicken coups. Troops build schools Troops open hospital. Troops are trained to kill and destroy. But some want a kinder gentler armed forces. Spome have forgotten what war is supposed to be and the results we see because of it is America's finest facing Court Martials for everything Liberals can think of now. This kinda stuff {the video} real and fake has been going on ever since. What is so insane is the USMC will waste time and money investigating this.

Sad part is this nation doesn't realize just how far it's been dumbed down. Our nation protects animals better than it does children. It seems it draws more outrage also. In Saudi Arabia a man hacks up a kid. Oh well. But let some Marines do a silly video and OMG what monsters.

I have to agree with you on this. Growing up in ranch country we saw hundreds of animals every day. Almost without exception every one of them was going to end their life in a violent, terrifying way. Those unfortunate enough to escape the mauling, flesh-tearing jaws of the preditors were doomed to a slow, agonizing slide into oblivion by sickness or old age or freezing.

You never quite become inured to death, but you do learn to put in perspective. All living creatures come to an end and it is measured in millions, billions, trillions. Each is individual but collectively it is the natural cycle of life.

Unfortunately three things have happened. First, we have become urbanised and insulated form the pervasiveness of death. Few have seen on a steady basis the utter violence of a coyote attack on a cornered cat, or a cow with its guts ripped out and partially eaten by a mountain lion while the cow was still alive or a hawk snatching a rabbit. Secondly, pets have changed. They are now purebred and pervasively cute. Finally, our relationship to pets has changed, they have moved into the home and become companions on an emotional level. All this leads to a loss of perspective.

The guy was an a-hole for doing this but it's a blip, a blink of an eye, a insignificance in the eternal order. It is not going to make him a serial killer or a psychotic, it is going to make him an a-hole.

When I was a kid people would bring their unwanted dogs out to the country and dump them, just knowing that some farmer or rancher would take them in. Well, we didn't take them in, we killed them by the dozens and hundreds. They would turn feral and rip livestock to pieces, just for fun. Every morning as we went out for chores we carried a gun in the hope that we would get a shot at one of the packs. Yes, we killed the pups first. Without the mother they were sure to die a miserable death. When the packs got too large or too many, the youngsters would get together and hunt them down for a day or two or three. None of it was enjoyable (other than the hunt) but you can damn well blame the gutless wonders who shifted their problem to us.

I suspect that if some of the same folks who are criticising this young marine were to go to one or our Indian Reservations they would be chucking pups into ravines as fast as they could catch them. Starved, abused, mange and worm ridden those animals' lives are a daily torture. No decent human being would allow them to live one minute more than is necessary.

“Vacation”, ay! Fine drama... a trailer park classic! Right up there with “Porky’s” and “Animal House”... do these bring back warm memories for you? You got these on DVD, right? Sorry mate but I just gotta ask.

Crikey, you are going to have to do MUCH BETTER than that — I’ve had better, more-creative verbal abuse from solvent-sniffing 13-year-old street-kid delinquents.

Go on, mate: have another go — take your best shot this time.

> I’ve heard about stories growing up a lot worse than this and they were actually real.

Once you’ve grown up, let us know: you’re lucky that all you’ve heard is stories (did you hear the one about the boogey man?). Believe it or not there is a slice of life that is considerably worse than anything you have ever heard about.

I understand where you're coming from. I live in a rural area myself and raise goats {non debudded Nubian's} If you want to see violence a goat is about as brutal of the farm animals as it gets. As for dumped off strays? Yea we get more than our share too. And yes farmers end up having to shoot them for chasing livestock not to mention a hungry pack of dogs will turn on you.

On the other hand we have a pet Fiest that is highly pampered. We rescued her at a truck stop. We thought about getting one at an animal shelter but the persons running them are the most arrogant, unrealistic, and not no mention intrusive persons you ever want to deal with and think $100 plus dollars is a good deal. I had a animal control officer after me once for leaving the dog in the van windows rolled down all because some Animal Planet kook called in. I even showed the animal control the vehicle inside temp in the mid 80's. Of course they don't tell you about what happens to their kills.

> I suspect that if some of the same folks who are criticising this young marine were to go to one or our Indian Reservations they would be chucking pups into ravines as fast as they could catch them...

Mate, nobody is disagreeing that real life is rough, and that unpleasant things happen in war, and that the enemy is a b@stard that murders kids and innocent civilians and circumcizes little girls, and of course these things should outrage us.

They do.

And whether this is a real pup or not is largely irrelevant: I am on record being of the opinion that the pup was probably already dead.

It surely can’t be reasonably argued that what we saw of the video was, in any way, the legitimate role of US Marines or allied forces. Did we send our Troops, at great expense and risk, all the way to Afghanistan and Iran, so that they could chuck cute puppies (dead or alive) down ravines? Is this what we teach our elite forces to do?

At the very least it gives the Good Guys a really bad look.

It gives all kinds of ammunition to the Bad Guys, who don’t even need to do anything except watch while Western Civilization hops around, having taken careful aim and shot itself squarely in the foot.

Heck, our Civilization sent these Marines there. We invented the helmet cameras that took the digital video (prank or not). We provided the Internet technology that made it possible to mass-distribute the video. We provided the YouTube to make it easy for everyone to watch. And we provided the audience at the home front and all around the world to get outraged over it all.

The Muslims didn’t need to do anything to do this harm: they got it for free, no effort on their part. We did it all, and paid for it, and served it up for them.

Enemy action could hardly have done a better, more effective propaganda job if they paid millions for it. Instead, they got it for nothing.

So no, I don’t think it was a harmless prank. In this day and age, and in today’s context, it was worse than that. It should be punished.
