Ok, i have a problem. I've got a super blackhawk, 44magnum, that has a cylinder pin latch that doesn't want to hold the pin in place. I have to push it back in every 2d or 3d shot to keep it going. has anyone else held this problem or do you know any fixes for it?
It was manufactured in 1976, I don't know how many rounds have been fired thru it, but I've put about 5,000 thru it in the last year, most loads were 240gr LSWC loaded with 10.3gr unique.
Can you ping the banglist for a little advice for me?
Send a letter to the factory. Or find a real gunsmith.
one told me to just put a new latch in it myself. one told me he wouldn’t answer until he saw the gun on his bench, with a fee for assessing it, i got two more to call when they get back to their shops this weekend, but they’re both part-timers, so i don’t know if they’re any good.
My second step would be to consult a qualified gunsmith.
Hope that helps.

It’s a pretty common problem in SA hoglegs. In the case of the Ruger, the cylinder latch pin gets peened and will allow the base-pin to move forward. The latch pins are available from Ruger, and don’t cost much. I’ve got one that’s pretty chronic about it, and I keep a supply for it. You should also keep a spare spring and nut for the latch assy.
Belt Mountain also makes a base-pin that has a set screw which is intended to address the problem too.
Try a new cylinder pin. Sounds like that’ll correct the problem.
Factory time! Or retire the pistol and get a replacement!
any idea where to get the slotted screwdriver to take out the old latch?
Given the chamber pressures that .44 mag generates, I would stop using it until a qualified gunsmith looked at it
Unless you REALLY know what you’re doing, I’d contact Ruger and send it back to the factory. They’ll make sure your pistol gets fixed properly.
I had to send a Mark II pistol back to the Ruger factory in Arizona a few months ago - they did a good job, sent my pistol back quickly, no FFL was needed, and did it at a reasonable price.

Ruger factory service has a well-deserved (dare I say, legendary) reputation for excellence. Contact them; they’ll usually fix your immediate concern and give your firearm a proper once-over.
5,000 in a year? Than thing has more milage than Britany’s mattress.
What is properly used for the cylinder latch nuts is a small spanner, but I use the tips of a pair of jewelers needle nose pliers. It works fine, but one has to be careful not to mar the finish on the nut.
There's a good Ruger forum (www.rugerforum.org) that has some very knowledgeable people.
that’s actually quite a bit less than i wanted to shoot. problems between finding enough components for reloading and the time consuming task of using a single stage press took its toll on my shooting.
