HELP: NEED BANDWIDTH FOR HIGH TRAFFIC WEBSITE
02-26-08 | Jeff Chandler

Posted on 02/26/2008 1:54:25 PM PST by Jeff Chandler

Can anybody recommend a high bandwidth dedicated server or a distributed server service?

A website I designed is receiving high traffic after only a couple weeks, and I am concerned about the bandwidth limitations of the shared server it is on.

We will be advertising on television in a few days and can expect huge amounts of traffic.

The site has many large video files.

TOPICS: Computers/Internet
KEYWORDS: bandwidth; internet; traffic; webhosting

Thanks!

If the traffic is that huge, maybe you need a distributed content delivery network (CDN) like akamai.com?

To: Jeff Chandler; pissant

Jeff, the most important thing will be to prohibit pissant from posting pictures of sexy female tennis players.

We previously had a dedicated server with ValueWeb (http://www.valueweb.com) and we were happy with it. We couldn't justify the cost and went to a shared server but will consider going back to ValueWeb if there is the need. 2,000 GB data transfer and they do have an option for multiple servers if you want to negotiate with them.

What kind of bandwidth are you talking about?

We’ve had 3500 visits in a week with no advertising, just word of mouth. We have many HD videos on the site.

It’s hard to tell, but It’s going to be a lot.

Well, you need some sort of estimate of (1) how much bandwidth you will need, and (2) how much you can afford. Are you the second coming of amazon.com, or (far smaller) freerepublic.com or something far smaller still.

Another way to approach it ... see what's available. For example, here's the price sheet from my favorite web hoster, pair Networks:

Select the best hosting plan for your busy Web site.

Our Dedicated hosting plans are better suited to serve resource-intensive sites.

HV-1
set up: Waived
monthly: $74.95

- The perfect upgrade from a lower-tier plan
- 400GB/month traffic
- 20 GB disk space
- 30 MySQL databases
- 5000 mailboxes
- 40 additional FTP logins
- Access by SSH and FTP
- Telephone Support
- Perl 5, PHP 5 Module, and more...

HV-2
set up: Waived
monthly: $129.95

- Great for your growing site
- 600GB/month traffic
- 30 GB disk space
- 30 MySQL databases
- 5000 mailboxes
- 40 additional FTP logins
- Access by SSH and FTP
- Telephone Support
- Perl 5, PHP 5 Module, and more...

HV-3
set up: Waived
monthly: $179.95

- Ideal for very popular sites
- 800GB/month traffic
- 40 GB disk space
- 30 MySQL databases
- 5000 mailboxes
- 40 additional FTP logins
- Access by SSH and FTP
- Telephone Support
- Perl 5, PHP 5 Module, and more...
Or they have lower price Web Hosting plans on shared servers, and higher priced Dedicated Hosting plans on fully dedicated servers. I run SanityIsland.us, the Freeper Daily Dose Image server, on one of these plans, for about $30/month.

The key numbers are how many GBytes per month of network traffic, and how many GBytes of disk storage, you choose to pay for.
