The only people who knew who would win are the accountants standing bacstage. Not all the films nominated were about Iraq. Conspiracy theories are just that. It was just a nice gesture on AMPAS’ part to do that. The Academy is generally a conservative body that dooesn’t like political speeches and usually cuts them off.

Nonsense, they knew the odds of embarrassing the troops were great by giving them this slot. They should not have chanced it, a faux “honor” to them, (with only slight applause), then to dishonoring their lives and mission, (with huge applause).
Believe me, if this were one of their special interest groups or causes, they would not have risked it.

The Academy is generally a conservative body that dooesnt like political speeches and usually cuts them off.The Academy isn't responsible for the production of the show, only the nominations and awards. All of the politcally-charged noms where in the Full Doc category. It's no coincidence that the production team chose to place the troops ahead of the most politically-correct award.
