Last week Microsoft rolled out three prerequisite updates to prepare users computers for the first service pack for Windows Vista. However, one of these updates apparently caused serious issues among some users, prompting Microsoft to quickly suspend automatic installations of KB937287 after customers complained that their PCs wouldn't boot up properly once the update had been applied.
For affected users who already received the update, the only solution is to reboot their computers, boot from their original Vista disc and restore their computer to a state several days prior. However, some users have reported hardware and hard disk problems after restoration.
Nick White downplayed the problem on the Windows Vista Team Blog, stating that only a small amount of customers were affected and only in unique circumstances. Microsoft is trying to look into what is causing this unrecoverable crash, and has yet to respond whether or not the blunder will impact its plans to start offering SP1 to users next month.

Is that a game on the display?
Looks like it. :’)
Ditto.
Perhaps you can install a version of linux and run a virtual machine that has XP.
I have an Compaq (HP) laptop that I specifically got with XP on it. Newegg has that as one of the filtering options when making a purchase.
bump
At the end of the month, I'm going to retire the old dell. I ordered a new laptop...a Mac Book Pro (first time Mac user here). I intend to set up another Win2K virtual window (there's a Mac version of Virtualbox).
I helped my mother buy a new Dell PC last week, and got it all set up Friday night. Thank goodness we could get her one with XP.
Worth repeating:
No Vista, staying with XP. If I go anywhere past it, its on a different OS....
I will get a 2 GB mem Vista OS. Are you telling me to switch to Vista now instead of XP?
I prefer XP and my two desktop computers are XP though they are recent enough to handle Vista
My laptop came with Vista and I upped the memory to 2GB. It is good and usable. I paid for that Vista license so I'm inclined to use it. I would also put XP on it (dual boot) but the hard drive is too small at 80gb. A 120gb hard drive would be better for dual boot. Vista + the recovery partition hog a lot of space but I can deal with that.
It all depends how quickly you fill up a hard drive. With me it's not very quickly because I'm not storing movies and DVDs on it. Those are about 2-4gb each
Happy with my XP...and my Mac...
I WAS thinking about getting my hubby a microsoft laptop ( not sure which one) despite the Vista problems but...going to hold off..his birthday is in April so maybe by then they will have it fixed..otherwise...it may well be a Mac ( like the MacBook Air) since he just wants it for email and googling..
I will find out within a day or 2 if they will increase the HD space from 60gb which I have currently to more than 60.
Thanks for the PM’s to remind me.
Mo’ memory
Mo’ hard drive space
I doubt your replacement will have less than 120gb hard drive. But verify and re-verify the specs

PLUS 120 gb hard drive..(it HAS to be 120 GB?)
Gotcha. Will call on a weekday. Hopefully, it won;t be another Indian dude who couldn’t speak a lick of English.
My suggestion: Take the replacement, new or refurbished HP laptop and sell it on ebay. Go to Dell and buy a new Dell laptop with XP installed. I had an HP laptop which lasted exactly 1.5 years and the motherboard died. I sold it for parts on ebay, and discovered that way over 50% of the HP laptop model I had (DV1000) on ebay were dead in the water, being sold for parts. I was shocked! I love hp printers and have bought them for years (own two hp laser printers now), but I will never buy an hp laptop again.
The problems with Vista are NOT heresay or a minority. I bought a replacement laptop with Vista, and I ended up selling it after a few months. I really had few problems with it, but probably only because I loaded very little software on it. It was just SO SLOW. It was a pig. Studies have shown a machine with Vista on it, as compared to the exactly configured machine with XP on it, will run slower, even if it has lots of Ram. The best case if you get Vista, is it will run slower than XP. The worst case is many nightmares. I have many friends who have had problems with Vista. This is NOT an urban legend. The product is a dog and M-soft knows it. See this video, where Bill Gates basically said Vista sucks
I just bought a new Dell desktop (with mouse and keyboard -- bought monitor separately) from Dell Outlet for $479 with Win XP. It priced out at $861 at Dell.com. It is a top of the line Inspiron with a Quad Core (Q6600) Intel processor, loaded up. All machines sold from Dell Outlet (new returns) have the same warranty and returnability as new machines.
Do yourself a favor and buy a new Dell with XP. At least Dell is still listening to their customers and still offers XP. We have bought many Dells for 15 years, got great buys, and never ever have any problems with them.
Thanks webschooner.
I’ve had the same suggestion from the board.
I 100% agree. HP SUCKS! I sent this 1.5 year old laptop TWICE to the factory to be repaired and it LOST (a bit) the sound coming from the speakers..even AFTER I sent it in twice.
I will never, ever buy HP again. Heck, I;ve warned friends of mine never to buy HP.
Huh! I hadn’t even heard of Mepis Linux!
