What type should I get? I only use a few programs and use the internet. I was considering Vision Computers. Niel Boortz recommends them and says they have a very good technical support area. Can anybody share their experience with Vision??

I’ve never heard of Vision.
I can say, though, do NOT get a computer that uses the operating system Microsoft Vista.
Hold out for XP, the previous one.

What type should I get? A gift computer is always best. It's Valentines Day, so shame your significant other into getting you one for a present.

If you can swing it get a MAC. If not get a PC with XP not Vista.

I just got a Dell Vostro with XP for $499. It has a wide screen and CD/DVD recorder. 2Gig of Ram and a 200Gig hard drive. It came Internet ready and I plugged in my DSL line and I was off to the Free Republics!!!

For your needs, I’d get a Mac - either a MacBook or an iMac.
You won’t have to worry about viruses, and yet you will always have the option of installing and running Windows. Or experimenting with Linux. Or run all 3 major operating systems, like I do - sometimes all at the same time.
One of the things that affects all computers is hard drive crashes. With the Mac, all you have to do to protect against that is buy a cheap external hard drive, plug it in, and press a single button on the screen.

so shame your significant other into getting you one for a present. Typical female response. I wouldn't get her ANYTHING if she tried that.

I want to spend about 400-500 bucks. Dont need a monitor. I know MACS are great but I do a couple business programs that use XP. Thanks for the update on VISTA I heard that was bad I also heard they are already planning on a replacement. Also, thanks for the Vision Computer experience. I want to put off buying until we get past this Vista stuff.

Don - check out a great little company called “thebookpc.com” - great service - fantastic tiny little “cube” style PC’s that run silent, and will take up to a core 2 quad. They and also be bough with or without an OS, so you could still get XP Pro (or better yet, LINUX) to go on it - they’re fully multimedia capable to.
I have 2 of them now - and they’re really great little boxes.

Yossarian, I was not aware that a MAC could run all these operating systems; that is amazing. I have a 5 year old MAC Notebook I wonder if I can use that?

Dell has undersized power supplies, and they are not always easy to add hardware. I would buy a new Motherboard, CPU, Power Supply and case. Then put my own new system together. For the kind of money the guy is willing to spend, he could have a great system.
