AMD adjusts three-core Phenom roll-out plan, moles claim

AMD's upcoming tri-core Phenom 8000-series desktop processors will appear next month, though only two of the anticipated three three-core CPUs will make it to market, it has been claimed.

According to PC manufacturer sources cited by Chinese-language site HKEPC, only the 2.1GHz Phenom 8400 and the 2.3GHz Phenom 8600 will arrive in March - presumably after a CeBIT launch.

Skip a month, however, and May will see the arrival of the 2.4GHz 8750, with the 2.1GHz 8450 and 2.3GHz 8650 following it in the broader May-June timeframe, the moles suggested.

AMD will be preparing to attack the market more agressively in 2008. Their Tri-Core processors, which will be due out 2nd quarter of this year, is said to be cheaper than Intel's Core 2 Duo. And sure enough, we'll find out whether these Tri-Core CPUs will mean better peformance than the Dual Cores. There's also AMD's flagship high-end processor, the Phenom FX, which have yet to be released. On top of that, AMD have just released their highest performing graphics card in the form of the Radeon HD3870x2. It uses 2 RV670 GPUs on a single PCB, with Crossfire configuration already configured and ready to go. Preliminary tests have shown that the HD3870x2 looks very promising.

With 4 Gig of ADot pc 6400 memory....

Running several varieties of the Linux OS,...Sabayon,...Ubuntu,...Linux Mint,...Fedora 8....all recognize the integrated ethernet and sound card of the motherboard....

And the Firefox browser is very responsive and FAST.....and SMOOTH....

Better than my 3 Gigahertz 6000.....even though the clock speed on the 9500 is only 2.2 Gigahertz.....

A review:

AMD 790FX Phenom Chipset On Linux

Back in November AMD had launched their "Spider platform", which is made up of AMD's first quad-core processor, ATI Radeon HD 3800 series graphics, and the AMD 7-Series chipsets. While we were quick to cover the ATI Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 graphics under Linux, today after much testing we are finally delivering our first Linux report from AMD's new 790FX Chipset. I’ve had a love for AMD since I bought my first Am486 100, but they’ve fallen behind, so much that I don’t think their competition is enough pressure on Intel anymore. I hope they recover, re-igniting fierce competition that keeps delivering better chips.

Yea Ernie, they just keep moving ahead. Of course Moore's law may be altered in the near future to physical limitations placed upon just how narrow a channel width one can make, and the width of the aluminum and polysilicon interconnects, among other things, but what the heck. We are far more advance then some Quantum chemist and physicists would have projected back some ten years back.
I think I remember mentioning to you that a chief fine line processing chemist in my brother's lab showed me the equations that indicated they would not make MOS transistor channel widths less then a quarter micron or so.
The general thinking back then [1987 range] (we where doing half micron while the rest of the world was struggling to make 1.5 or even wider), the physical limits where fast approaching the point where smaller transistors using silicon based technology would come to a halt.
And the many things that go into fabricating this dense IC, such as the narrow beam Implant machines, photo lithography, etc., has advance so much. Those outside the world of IC fabrication do not appreciate the level of sophistication required of all the equipment required to produce a IC.
It is truly marvelous stuff.

That would have been pretty standard fare for the chip making industry. Clock speed is already determined by which chips on the wafer can test how high. The Cell processor on the PS3 is fabricated with 8 SPUs, but they ship with only seven activated so the chip can still ship if one of the SPUs is bad.

It's just yield-increasing strategies, making chips cheaper for us.
