MamaBear, Marissa and I went for the inauguration. The snow was an unexpected treat.

It was a fun time.

Today's poem:

.

We Don’t Die

We are the young and the fearless,
The nimble, and bright of eye.
We are the Force of the Future,
And the ones whose first step is the sky.

We are around you always,
We pester a bit under foot.
But we are the dreams that you’ve lived for,
And where all your life’s hope has been put.

We are an army of innocents,
Filled with bright hope for our tasks.
We stand here in rows and in columns,
Just waiting for that which Life asks.

Like the waves against rocks at the beachhead,
Where some plumes then ascend to the sky,
Some may transform into angels,
But the rest of us surge right on by.

More than daily we charge to the shore,
As we break down the rocks into sand,
To destroy not just Death but his minions,
Who had thought they could make a firm stand.

We’ll be here when you have surrendered,
To catch up the flag that may fall.
We’ll be here. We will always be waiting,
We’ll be here to answer the call.

Thank you, Dita.

I should do a search for the DC thread. It was such a wonderful trip and we met so many great FReepers.

Your photo of the White House is beautiful. I don’t want to live where there is much snow but it sure makes lovely pictures.

I looked closer at my file, and that photos was taken a year ago. It was a news photo that I snagged.

I’m having connection problems myself. I think I have ice getting into the cable connections.

On this bright sunny day, the connection seems fine, but I suspect this is not yet the end of the story. Night and bad weather will return.

I bet I could make a good sermon out of that.

Time Out!

I think we’ll need a time-out, to learn the rules some more,
No scratching at the couch, and please!, no puddles on the floor!
And learn to get along somehow, you mustn’t hiss and spat,
I swear sometimes you act as if you were a dog and cat!

Each of you is in my club. You must obey each rule.
You are the students in my class. I’m teacher of this school.
Now let’s go at it one more time. I want you to play nice.
And pay attention, if you please. Don’t make me say it twice.

The Kindness Of Strangers
Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. —Hebrews 13:2

While I was taking a flight to Surabaya, Indonesia, for a Bible conference, the flight attendants brought meal service. I had just eaten in the Singapore airport, so I declined, asking only for a soft drink. The Indonesian man next to me, a stranger, was visibly concerned.

The man asked if I felt okay, and I assured him I was fine. He then asked if perhaps the meal didn’t appeal to me. I responded that I just wasn’t hungry. He then surprised me by offering his own meal to me, thinking that if I tried it I might actually enjoy it. It was done in such a gentle and genuine way that it was obviously an expression of his concern for my welfare.

In a self-centered world where we are conditioned to look out for our own interests above and beyond all else, such kindness was unexpected. The man’s simple gesture showed a different kind of heart and a different set of values. As followers of Christ, we are called to model a similar counter-cultural attitude toward life (Phil. 2:1-8).

In Hebrews 13:2 we read, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.” What better way to represent Christ than with kindness—even to strangers.

Try to bring God’s love and kindness
Into someone’s life today;
Even just the gift of caring
Will the Savior’s love display.  —Hess

Kindness is one gift anyone can give.

The Cloud

I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers,
From the seas and the streams;
I bear light shade for the leaves when laid
In their noonday dreams.
From my wings are shaken the dews that waken
The sweet buds every one,
When rocked to rest on their mother’s breast,
As she dances about the sun.
I wield the flail of the lashing hail,
And whiten the green plains under,
And then again I dissolve it in rain,
And laugh as I pass in thunder.

I sift the snow on the mountains below,
And their great pines groan aghast;
And all the night ‘tis my pillow white,
While I sleep in the arms of the blast.
Sublime on the towers of my skiey bowers,
Lightning my pilot sits;
In a cavern under is fettered the thunder,
It struggles and howls at fits;
Over earth and ocean, with gentle motion,
This pilot is guiding me,
Lured by the love of the genii that move
In the depths of the purple sea;
Over the rills, and the crags, and the hills,
Over the lakes and the plains,
Wherever he dream, under mountain or stream,
The Spirit he loves remains;
And I all the while bask in Heaven’s blue smile,
Whilst he is dissolving in rains.

The sanguine Sunrise, with his meteor eyes,
And his burning plumes outspread,
Leaps on the back of my sailing rack,
When the morning star shines dead;
As on the jag of a mountain crag,
Which an earthquake rocks and swings,
An eagle alit one moment may sit
In the light of its golden wings.
And when Sunset may breathe, from the lit sea beneath,
Its ardours of rest and of love,
And the crimson pall of eve may fall
From the depth of Heaven above,
With wings folded I rest, on mine aëry nest,
As still as a brooding dove.

That orbèd maiden with white fire laden,
Whom mortals call the Moon,
Glides glimmering o’er my fleece-like floor,
By the midnight breezes strewn;
And wherever the beat of her unseen feet,
Which only the angels hear,
May have broken the woof of my tent’s thin roof,
The stars peep behind her and peer;
And I laugh to see them whirl and flee,
Like a swarm of golden bees,
When I widen the rent in my wind-built tent,
Till calm the rivers, lakes, and seas,
Like strips of the sky fallen through me on high,
Are each paved with the moon and these.

I bind the Sun’s throne with a burning zone,
And the Moon’s with a girdle of pearl;
The volcanoes are dim, and the stars reel and swim,
When the whirlwinds my banner unfurl.
From cape to cape, with a bridge-like shape,
Over a torrent sea,
Sunbeam-proof, I hang like a roof,
The mountains its columns be.
The triumphal arch through which I march
With hurricane, fire, and snow,
When the Powers of the air are chained to my chair,
Is the million-coloured bow;
The sphere-fire above its soft colours wove,
While the moist Earth was laughing below.

I am the daughter of Earth and Water,
And the nursling of the Sky;
I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores;
I change, but I cannot die.
For after the rain when with never a stain
The pavilion of Heaven is bare,
And the winds and sunbeams with their convex gleams
Build up the blue dome of air,
I silently laugh at my own cenotaph,
And out of the caverns of rain,
Like a child from the womb, like a ghost from the tomb,
I arise and unbuild it again.

— Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)

We haven’t had any snow in the Fresno area, so MamaBear and I were reminiscing about our trip to DC.

We finally found the thread of "Marissa goes to Washington".

I reposted the two posts at the end of the original thread.

I started at post #134 and enjoyed reading the thread again.

I want to go back to DC!!
