The Mets have acquired lefthanded ace Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins for prospects Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey, a report on USAToday.com says.

According to the web site, the deal depends on the Mets and Santana reaching an agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension within the next three days.

....

Although the Mets sacrificed four key members of their farm system in the deal, they also managed to make the trade without giving up prized prospect Fernando Martinez.

The Yanks concede the 2008 AL East Division crown to the Red Sox before pitchers and catchers report!

don’t know how you can trade Santana without getting the “prized” prospect...not all is happy in MN right now.

At least the Yankees didn’t get him.

The Twins were more interested in getting him away from AL competitors (Red Sox/Yanks) than getting proper value. If the Royals wanted Santana, they could have gotten him, having better prospects to offer than the Mets and posing no threat to the Twins.

I’d rather get something for him than go thru this year and have him walk away like Tori did. I had wished we’d traded Hunter last July when it became apparent this wasn’t going to be a year for a run.

All that being said, I’m saddened Johan is gone. It was nice while it lasted.

This is awesome news!! I did not want the sox to pony up the talent the twinkies were asking for but did not want Santana to end up on the Yank-offs!!

Thank you Mets!!

Now the Sox need to trade Coco Crisp and sign a couple of utility guys, one to back up Youk and one outfielder, and they will be ready to go for 2008.

If Atlanta billed itself as “America’s Team”, can the Mets now bill themselves as “Latin America’s Team”???

Well this is good news for Red Sox fans. We would have had to give up too much to acquire him. But if the Yankees had gotten him, it would have been a major bummer as the Yankees would have been back in contention.

Since he's going to the Mets, I predict the Red Sox winning the AL East over the Yankees by 11 1/2 games this coming year.

I think the Yankees have lots of young talent that will form the backbone of a strong team for years to come. Just like the Sox.

Hard to hate the Yanks for building from within and doing it the right way.

1. At least the Yanks didn't get him.
2. The Mets seem to be like drunken sailors on shore leave.
3. Pedro Martinez is NOT happy about this.

That's most shocking about this recent development. Previously, the Yanks would just send over anyone they had and pay premium dollars as well (i.e., Abreu). Somebody over there put on the clamp-down.
