Shoplifting is all in the family for one California clan, police say.
A grandmother, her daughter and some of her grandchildren tried to steal $900 worth of merchandise from a Target store in Lodi, 35 miles south of Sacramento, police Officer Misty Smith said.
The family's alleged shoplifting spree earlier this week was captured by surveillance video, which police say showed them cutting open boxes and hiding MP3 players, digital cameras, DVDs, jewelry and sports equipment in purses, bags and a backpack.
An 8-year-old and a 5-year-old were among the family members detained.
"The 5-year-old actually had a pack of gum. A small item but we could see where her life was heading because she thinks more than likely this is a normal way of life, this is what you do," said Dale Eubanks of the Lodi police.
Linda Robinson, 59, and her 36-year-old daughter, Anna Fernandez, were charged Wednesday with burglary, grand theft, vandalism and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. *** Fernandez's teenage sons, 17 and 14, were arrested on suspicion of grand theft and will face charges in juvenille court, authorities said. Another teen not related to the family also was arrested.
The two children were released to relatives and will not face charges.
It was not immediately clear if the family had a lawyer.

These are EXACTLY the types of people Democrats want to make sure get those "freebait" (aka, rebate) checks in the mail with their "economic stimulus package", so they don't have to steal things they NEED.
Snuck in on a greyhound, I’ll be hitching out if I go.
I was just stealing games, with my grandkids all in tow.
X box under one arm and a mac with OS 10.
Oh lord, busted in Lodi again!
BTW, I just gotta laugh at that comment. Are you saying that when making returns to Wal-Mart, you can do it all with no customer service desk being involved? Are you saying that when the self service checkout computer hangs up, you don't need customer service to come unlock it so you can keep scanning your items? Are you sure you've ever shopped at Wal-Mart before?
Guilty! lol.
Or until the ACLU hears about this oppressed family.
W-M self service check outs are soon to be history. Too much theft. They are already gone in the 6 W-Ms in my area.
Wow. I literally Laughed Out Loud.
Hasn’t popped up yet on DU. I have the over/under at “It’s Bush’s fault” at four posts.
Me too, I just wish it wouldn't stop at simple shoplifting. If someone would just empty their cash registers and take out a couple of cashiers in a hyper-violent display, then things would be good.
Dumbass.
Don’t rule out the nuclear option.
Some of Clinton’s traveler cousins?
Not that it came as a surprise to anyone but Bill Clinton claims to be one.
Whole bunch of them live in North Carolina.
So I guess they’re “stuck in Lodi, again”.
Boy! You better ease off for a while.
I’m still spry enough to out run the door greeter.
What I love is how they went to self service, and they still keep half the self service registers closed for no apparent reason. I usually take my crap to the jewelry counter and make them check me out.
My original point was that Target customer service has been assholes to myself and many people I know on many different occasions, including the time they refused to give me the DVD they owed me, even going so far as to lying to me and saying it was in my bag the first time. Wal-Mart customer service would have taken care of me no questions asked, without treating me like a criminal. Let’s not forget a few years ago when Target chased the Salvation Army off from their storefronts. I couldn’t care less about Target’s financial future. If they go under, they only deserved it.
Hard to believe anybody would give those “ladies” a second look.
