January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
The reason the marriage thing was changed because people were caught paying people to marry them. You remember the woman from Lebanon working in the FBI, well she also had an army officer sister that paid someone to marry her.
I’ll second that!
re: wive’s two names.
The name Smith on the birth certificate is maiden name (mine appears on my son’s birth certificate from Onslow Co as well) Maybe her mom is remarried?
I know. Her cell was tossed outside the base main gate, I think.
Nancy Grace talking about this NOW.
The card was in the grass just outside Durham's Greyhound bus station. "It was sort of obvious," Yordy said. "I feel like I must have been the first person walking by because it was really easy to see it."
I guess he figured trash cans and storm drains would be the first places police would search. /sarc
I’m very skeptical about the ATM card being ‘dropped’ at another bus station in Raleigh/Durham. Laurean could have had someone else do that to through the LE off. I just find it a little bit too convenient.
through=throw
Anyone else watching this? Nancy Grace is pushing too hard, in my opinion.
I really hope this guy gets nabbed soon. Maybe he's trying at this moment to connect with homies from Las Vegas. Sad to think he got into the Marines. Would the Marines have access to his juvenile record?
She can be a little over-bearing at times, but she sure is for the victim....especially children. She’ll be a wonderful mother too. :)
Your FReeper name seems familiar, yet you are new here. Are you new to FR? If so, welcome!
I absolutely agree, but I don’t like how several hosts in the last day or two are trying to pit civilian and military jurisdictions against one another.
I agree with you there. She’s a hardnose at times, but she’s a lot better than tabloid Greta. I can’t watch her anymore.
Dropping the ATM (or Military ID card) at the Durham Bus Station on Saturday AND dropping the cell phone outside the military base in December sounds WAY wierd. Either he wants to be found or is trying to throw off authorities with false clues that he or someone else is planting. Or maybe he’s got holes in his pant pockets.
You’re right. I just find it too convenient for those items to have been found where they were found. Weird is right. “holes in his pant pockets” LOL
I’ve been wondering about the “coincidences.” It’s starting to seem like he is taunting the feds, or he’s trying to pull them in one direction while he’s heading in another.
Just like the Muslim community seems to be protecting the father who “Honor” killed his two daughters and left them for dead in his cab here in Dallas, I think Cesar or whatever he is known by...I wonder if some in the Mexican community are harboring him and helping him along?
