January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
” ... Laurean then told Ramos Ramirez, whose mother is Laurean’s sister, ...”
That has to be wrong. If Cesar had a sister who was the mother of this man, that would make Ramos Ramirez Cesar’s nephew, not cousin.
I’m betting that Ramos Ramirez’s mother is the sister of Elvira Ramirez Laurean, Cesar’s mother. But, of course, I can’t prove that, not having Mexican records to check.
Thanks. I’m not familiar with this bus line, but here in Houston, there was a lot of coverage of that bus accident and all the ramifications for the Mexicans in this area who use it all the time.
So, I guess they did shut down for a while, then started back up, according to that. Glad to know I wasn’t just crazy, after all, lol.
Thank you Rte - glad you are on the job;) keeping all the players’ records straight.
Thankfully, this suspect has a warrant for his arrest. Unlike the ANS & Drew Peterson cases - where it seems justice is light years away.
take it easy
sod
Thanks - you, too! You know I have to nit-pick sometimes - but in this case, I let everyone else do the heavy lifting.
LOL, I’ve had my own couple of bugaboos with my local TV news reporters the last day or so - one said that “So-and-So *drowned to death*” - and another talked about a police chase where they were “driving erotically.” Hee hee.
Guess I can just laugh and come to FR to poke fun at them!
Cesar now has fake ID’s, and can sneak back across the border anytime he wants and get a job as a landscaper. He’s good at digging and shopping using someone else’s card. Dog Chapman, as dispicable as he is after his crying gig on television, could do a better job than our FBI, but I doubt he’ll be making any more trips to Mexico. Unfortunately.
Funny you should mention DOG...did you see him interviewed the other night? He mentioned there are ALOT of bounty hunters out there and down there looking for Laurean. But no mention of him going down.
I thought you had to have ID to even ride a bus these days post 911....wonder what ID he used. By the time he got to Houston on the 12th late in the afternoon, wasn’t there an APB/Warrant out for him then?
Printed out the timeline on JDNews but haven’t filled in the new stuff yet...and it was 8 pages printed up to the 16th and most of this has changed now. Had to for my sanity, was ending up with 10 browswer windows up and scanning for times.....LOL....no wonder the computer crashed.
You are doing awesome research, Lyn, and I've only crashed my computer 2 times. :)
Something tells me that these bus companies catering to the Mexican immigrant trade are probably not big on checking ID’s.
Still speechless that this guy had three aliases and was allowed in the Marines!!!!
He apparently is quite the writer ala Jack London or Ernest Hemingway - mailing letters from his travels!!!!!
IMHO they were pre-written by Christina - before he left town with instructions on where and when to mail.
$25,000 seems too low to interest a bounty hunter.
By now Laurean has his "protection".
I think it was FOX that interviewed him during a piece on this case...but, I am with you - the tears....please give me a break, you said what you said, shut up and pay for it.
I did figure out that when using my Firefox browser my post were taking up to 6 hours to post, so back to the very unstable IE. Now if I could just figure out how to post pictures here and highlight copied text like everyone else. ;)(not as computer literate as my kids think...lol)
Let’s do the math.
26 passenger paying $100 per trip = $2600
Mileage and gas costs????
Driver salary?
Insurance?
Maintenance?
Probably not very profitable - might want to take VERY GOOD tips - especially on the return trip to US;)
Ramos Ramirez said he didn't contact police about his cousin because he believes Laurean is innocent.
"It didn't seem right to contact police," he said. "He is a normal person, with no tendency for doing bad things."
He said police still hadn't contacted him about his cousin late Tuesday, despite the international manhunt.
Officials in Jalisco state, home to Guadalajara, said they hadn't been formally notified of Laurean's warrant.
Ramos Ramirez said Laurean and most of the Marine's family moved to the U.S. more than 10 years ago, and he had seen Laurean only three other times since. The second time, five years ago, Laurean came for vacation and spent a few days with Ramos Ramirez's mother, Maria Ramirez.
Laurean hasn't contacted any other family members in Mexico, Ramos Ramirez said.
He said Laurean didn't stay long, and didn't say anything about why he was in Mexico or where he was headed next. Ramos Ramirez said he wasn't surprised by the brief visit because Laurean isn't very close to relatives in Mexico. His cousin seemed calm, he added.
"It was like any visit," Ramos Ramirez said
Still speechless that this guy had three aliases and was allowed in the Marines!!!!
Actually, the Mexicans are known for using Mothers maiden name and family names. I was unaware until we posted fallen warriors on our family support site and was told by someone of spanish nationally how to post their names. Sometimes it is hyphenated ie Ramirez-Laurean or vice versa. Life always amazes me...always something to learn. So the alias’s he is using are family names, Laurean, Sanchez, Ramirez etc. All normal in the Mexican world.
***All normal in the Mexican world.***
OMG I thought he was in the US Marines - silly me!
Fox just talking of the President’s plan to give out money. I can see Christina now “ Here HONEY, the gov just sent this 1600.00....I am confined to Jueneville and can’t hit Wally World or Lowes.....so take it and run, run, run.”
Sorry, had to say that. Should we pluck his social sec number from the FBI warrant and head off the IRS to with hold his tax refund...and any other monies?
OK off to work out of town today, back later tonight....
Fugitive Marine seen in Mexico, cousin says
ZAPOPAN, Mexico (CNN)--A cousin of suspected killer Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean told CNN Tuesday that he saw the wanted man near Guadalajara a week ago.
Juan Antonio Ramos Ramirez said he did not know at the time the Marine visited him at his liquor store in Zapopan that Laurean was being sought by authorities for murder.
"He stopped by--just a few days ago, last week," he said.
Asked what his cousin had told him, Ramos said, "Just 'Hi, I'm just passing by.' He told me he was here with some buddies for a few days and, you know, it's not the first time he's come by to visit, say hi to the family."
Also Tuesday, the FBI released photographs it said were taken within the past eight months showing the fugitive. Laurean has a tattoo of a phoenix rising from ashes on his left upper arm and a tattoo "possibly of a human skull layered over another image on his right upper arm," the agency said.
A law enforcement source told CNN Tuesday that, in addition to the letter he left for his wife at their house, Laurean has mailed her three others.
One letter is postmarked after Laurean left their North Carolina home on January 11 and drove to a motel in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, telling her he would be on the road, the source said. He wrote where he was leaving the truck and described the motel he was staying in, located near a mall the two had visited, the source said.
The letter was postmarked from Raleigh-Durham, the source said.
The FBI plans to circulate in Mexico either matchbooks or business cards with Laurean's photo. The Marine's wanted poster is on the FBI's Most Wanted List with a $25,000 reward.
There’s a big drug gang war going on all over Mexico - Laurean is back page news.
