Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

LOL. Whoops, I didn't check to see if anyone else had posted before I did. The statement from the sheriff's dept. said..."There appeared to be the bodies of an adult female with a fetus located near the abdomen region of the female." Does that sounds funny?

If you look along the side of the bags, it looks like:

Something/Something Base Step 1

Are these the pictures from yesterday? If so the blocks are moved from the actual pit. Link to Greta video from crimescene featured last night:

The cinder blocks seen in the photos above is what the “fire pit” looked like before investigators unearthed Maria and baby’s remains. Whatever Greta was showing was after the excavation.

“Patio/Paver Base Step 1 ???”

I wondered the same thing after Sue mentioned the patio/paver thought. I checked at Lowes and couldn’t find anything that looked like the bags. I’m guessing patio/paver is pretty much just “sand”?

Patio/Paver Base Step 1
Use as filler or to build up project area 3” to 4”
Cover with 1” of Leveling Sand
Use when building patios, walkways or pool decks

Looked on Lowe’s website, theirs shown is another bag, but could he have bought elsewhere, Home Depot, Wal Mart....

I also found this:

“Brand Name: Quikrete Patio Paver Limestone Base No. 1150-49”

What is lime good for? Hmm... Or it could just be sand.

Up in these parts, the base for a patio would be a certain kind of gravel. Then sand goes on top of that. But down south they may do things differently.

I also found this:

“All Purpose Sand, Excellent For Sandboxes & Traction Aid, As Patio/Paver Base, For Soil Amendment & Pet Litter, As Base For Above Ground Pools & As A Soil Amendment, Also Great For Concrete/Masonry Applications”

Regarding the pic of the fire pit, it looks like a lot of dirt was disturbed around the outside of the cinderblocks. Maybe he had to do a lot of digging, maybe getting rid of some dirt with evidence on it. It seems like an unusually wide area to dig if you just wanted a fire pit. And the shape of the digging is unusual.

some of the areas would be dirt thrown out of the hole (there will be leftover dirt because the hold is “occupied”), and other areas where he may have encountered rocks, hard clay, etc.

***Am I the only one who can’t imagine a pregnant woman taking a 26 hour bus trip??***

No - it did seem desperate - but then again, has anything made sense?

Driving by herself would have been far more physically demanding - I understand that those GH or TW buses have some facilities and make stops. If she were to experience discomfort there would be other passengers for assistance and conversation.

When I enlarged the image I also thought the first word could be “patio.”

The wife gave husband a huge head start. Thank you wife! I believe longer than when she handed her note over.

The cousin in Mexico said that CL was with 3 FRIENDS. Isn't it possible that the truck was dumped in Raleigh/Durham (and the ID of Maria at the bus depot) by another person? He could travel in another vehicle undetected! I don't know if the friends are U.S. friends, or friends from Mexico.

More videos, pictures from GretaWire. Here's one pic:

"...You can see in the back of the pic the home of now fugitive Cesar Laurean….and just to the left of the bricks in the foreground of this pic is the pit where she was buried and burned…the bricks you see were framed around the pit but were moved to where they are now as her remains were removed"....

he wanted to make sure it looked like she was going someplace, but why El Paso, who does Maria know in El Paso?

was she drugged? I assume toxicology is being done on the remains.
