January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
Bus trip to El Paso= ~~ 26 hours and ~~$175
Train Trip to El Paso= ~~3 days and~$260 (would require driving to Raleigh)
Airplane Trip to El Paso= ~~over $1100 and 10 hours long
Am I the only one who can’t imagine a pregnant woman taking a 26 hour bus trip??
Re. the bus ticket at the station, I think you’re right. She allegedly bought it on the 14th to be used on the 15th. The ticket was good for 6 months, but was never found. I don’t know if her purse or car keys were found either, though.
I’m not sure about the guy who says she sold the ticket. I remember seeing part of the video interview with him. He was loving his 15 minutes of fame, wearing a blue shirt, yellow plaid suit (or something crazy like that!). He indicated she was having no problem getting around, even though Maria’s roommate, Durham, indicated she was not that mobile when home. Also, he commented that she asked if she could leave her car in the bus lot when she took the bus, but then drove off. If it was Maria, she was wearing the Layton or Dayton big sweatshirt that shows up in the ATM at 4:20 pm.
BTW, I don’t buy Furmon’s theory. I don’t think Maria trusted him. If they were running away together, they would take a vehicle. She was very pregnant. A vehicle is WAY more comfortable, faster than a Greyhound, and leaves less clues. Besides, they didn’t buy a ticket for him.
If it was Maria that bought the ticket (which I’m doubting), then she planned to come back for her car. If it wasn’t Maria, it was intended to be a clue left behind that she went UA.
Also,
if you run away with someone at 8 months, a vehicle would mean potty breaks, getting to prop your feet up, lots more comfort etc.
OK, the base party-— if the wife was there, how long was she at the party? And when did she leave?
The last Christmas party I attended on base had Santa arriving by helicopter, pictures with Santa, and games for the kids, etc.
I think it’s ABSOLUTELY BIZARRE Christina was there without her husband. If she showed up without her child I think everyone would take note. It would be VERY strange in the MC world for just the wife to show up ALONE to the unit Christmas party.
I think I would have driven my own car personally. And I mean if I would have even attempted a trip......
I haven't had the time to post in recent days, but I am wondering what you and all the others think about these two photos.
Regarding the party.....it has been said that she arrived home at 1900. I don’t know if that’s a consistant time throughout this story though.......
To me, not the same. But I’ve been wrong before :)
It does look like plastic.
Re: Paint supplies
There are two paint rolling trays pictured; one atop the paint can and the other shown in the lower right corner of the garage shoe pic.
Maria told her mom at 2:30 pm she was going to that party on Dec. 14 even though she expected Cesear would be there. She felt it was expected by command. According to Christina she went, in the afternoon and got home at 7pm. Christina says Cesear didn’t go. Everything that went wrong on the 14th seems to center around this party (IMO). I doubt anyone has interviewed the party goers to find out if any or all three were there, seen in the parking lot, whatever.
When Durham returned home after work (time?), he finds the letter from Maria that she’s out of there, her car is gone, and calls the mom. Her phone is found on the 20th right outside the base along the highway by a stranded motorist. That was pure coincidence that anyone found it, it seems. Something happened around the base/Maria’s house, IMO, on the day/night of the party.
She got home at 7, but how long was she at the party?? Does anyone know? Also, if she had the baby with her, does going to an afternoon party and staying ‘til 7 sound odd?
One of the garage photos shows a brown patch where fresh paint was applied in an attempt to cover up evidence from the alleged crime, investigators said. That piece of wall has since been removed and seized as evidence.

“Charred human remains of an adult and a fetus were unearthed,” the statement read. “There appeared to be the bodies of an adult female with a fetus located near the abdomen region of the female.”
Authorities also released images from inside the Laurean house, including the garage where they believe the murder took place “based on the blood and the interpretation of the blood spatters” on the walls. The photos show a paint tray and 2-foot square patch of wall that has been repainted.

Yeah, you’re probably right.
I’ve got to believe that there must have been some formation after this story broke advising Cesar’s fellow Marines to not blog, post photos, or talk to the media about this guy, because there is still so little out there. Of course, spouses are not Marines, but we know how stuff like this goes.
Seriously, though, there must be dozens of photos from holiday parties, etc.
I just hope the investigators are more on the ball than they were the day they overlooked a shoe in the yard.
And another thing, it looks like his myspace account was last used on the 5th of Jan. Interesting that he calls himself Armando Laurean. He also set up an account prior to that with the name of Cesar Laurean, but it looks like he bagged that one well before the holidays.
Maybe she bought the ticket for CL? Maybe he said he was going to leave his wife, and would rondevous with Maria at some later date?
The Christmas party probably started at 1700. But they still have to let the kids get out of school, spouses get off of work, etc. The Marines had a half day.
But the strange thing is that they live on the other side of town...easy, 30 minute trip. Maybe even 45 right before Christmas. That would mean she didn’t stay very long.
If I were Stephanie Plum-— I’d start at the party-—
I think I lot can be learned from there-—
Ask questions and ask to look at pictures.
I agree that something could have happened in the parking lot, which would have explained why he and she wasn’t there.
And the wife being at the party sans hubby or child? Well, that just screams “I AM CREATING AN ALIBI!”
OK,
Get there at 5pm,
leave at what? 6:15pm? Not too odd.
But that leaves a window of time between 2:30 and 5pm for her to be elsewhere.
No, sorry. Tried enlarging the image and still can’t make out the print on the bags. They look very new, though, don’t they?
