Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Latest from Jacksonville Daily News, Laurean 'sightings' abound

"As the international manhunt for a Marine corporal charged with the slaying of a pregnant Marine continues into its 12th day, investigators say they are still receiving credible tips as to his whereabouts.

"We receive tips on a daily basis and are developing information in the course of our investigation," said Capt. Rick Sutherland of the Onslow County Sheriff's Department. "....... ...."The hunt for Laurean has investigators fielding tips that Laurean has been spotted everywhere from Mexico to Nevada, all points in between and less credible information that he is still in North Carolina.

Laurean fled his Half Moon-area home Jan. 11, leaving behind at least two notes with his wife, Christina Laurean, "......

......"On Christmas Eve, 10 days after authorities believe Lauterbach was killed, a male removed cash from the Marine Federal Credit Union automatic teller machine in the Bojangles parking lot at Gum Branch Road and Western Boulevard - 3.28 miles from Laurean's home. ".....

....""America's Most Wanted" also had footage of Laurean shopping a Lowe's Home Improvement with another man, buying a wheelbarrow, cinderblocks and paint.

Sutherland said investigators have identified the other man, questioned him and received information from him. Sutherland would not provide the man's name. ".....

I think his friends know more than is coming out. They have to.

I was wondering also about the wife being back on base...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but when I was in the Marines, if you were in UA status or above, your paycheck stopped. If that is the case, she doesnt have ny income comingin because I am pretty sure she didnt have a job before she was recalled to activeduty. Maybe that is why they put her back on base, besides wanting to make sure she didnt flee like he did.

He was only an E4. According to the pay charts he made in 2007...

$1786.50 per month plus... $848 per month for housing (with dependants).

Not much. What is the going rent rates in Lejeune? Did they own that house?

Could also explain the Western Union. Extra Christmas money?

Still think she is in on this, just trying to give another explanation for the money coming in.

Ack. The BAH rate I gave is for 2008. It went up since 2007. So that means he made even less.

They bought the home on a VA loan. Paid approx. $115k for it in 2005 or 2006. I had the file. I’ll see if I can find it again.

They owned that house. I think it was Brian or IamHD that looked up their records on line for their home. Their home was definitely on the “less than luxurious” side.

Money coming in could be different things. It could be Christmas presents. Or it could be planning for his flight from the law. I wish they would explain the Western Union thing in more detail.

OK,
Is it just me, or does it look like wiped up blood off the base of the childseat?

OK,
December 14th was a Friday.
The 15th was a Saturday and the 16th was a Sunday.

I doubt he could have killed her on the 15th at his house because not only would his wife be home, but well, lots of neighbors around etc.

My guess (and the time of day may help) is he chose a time on Sunday when Christine AND/OR the neighbors were not around, or at least thinner. As far as where was Marie....Idunno.

Unless Christine was in on it and they left Marie’s body in the garage until the time was good to bury her.

Yep, and Karla Homolka plea bargained herself into a light sentence before the facts came out....turned out SHE was the mastermind and the true monster.

Funny, but I was thinking of the same paralell too.

My kids are young. When they were little they were always attached to ME. I am thinking Christina took the baby with her to the Christmas party. The Christmas parties on base are family focused and children are expected to attend. I think she took the baby with and that left Cesar with some free time....

LOL....once in Twentynine Palms my husband decided he was going to run to the store. He said he would take our four year old daughter with him. That was rare because usually we did everything as a family and all went together or he would make the quick trip alone. I thought about it for a minute and said,”Hey, why don’t you take Jack who was one and a half at the time) with you?” LOL...I still remember the panic in his voice and the matching look on his face when he said,”TAKE BOTH KIDS??? I can’t control both kids at a store!” OK, so I digress a little there :)

The kids usually hang with momma though :)

Good point! If it was late evening, or even the middle of the night, no one would have really noticed either.

I thought that very same thing about the blood on the car seat.

When they were going over the “we found blood but we have to make sure it’s human, etc...” I was just overwhelmed. Who has that much blood, human or otherwise, in their garage? Can you even explain that much animal blood??????

It’s crazy!

How do they know it was Marie that bought the ticket on the 14th?

Did someone at the Bus Station ID her as the ticket purchaser? Or was the purchase on her debit card? Or was there simply a ticket stubb in her car?

In the trunk of her car, maybe?

Christine’s parents and family live nearby...my guess is “Would you keep the baby?” was said a lot those days. Especially if they used the excuse of “We need to go buy Christmas stuff for her.”

Animal blood is easy-—
Hunters....lots of folks have deer, boar, turkey they dress in their back yards or garages. So yeah, blood isn’t uncommon in some homes. It’s an easy “Friend shot a deer, I finished cutting it up here on this table then put it in the freezer.”

Mark pointed out on Greta last night that if they were painting the house where are their tarps? They would have used tarps, right? There are none pictured near the painting supplies in the garage. Maybe they were used to wrap Maria up while waiting to figure out what to do with her?

My husband hunted. They said that garage was very cluttered and in the spot where they found blood they were commenting on how little space there really was there.

Would you dress that close to child’s car seat? I don’t think they thought for a minute Cesar was a hunter. Just my opinion though....

I’ve painted a lot just using old sheets and towels under me. Also, the floors look like they’re tile....really easy cleanup-—
OR,
they could have painted over carpet they trashed later.
