Buckeyhes and BCS: Third Times the Harm
ESPN ^ | 1.8.08 | By Pat Forde

NEW ORLEANS -- With the 2007 football season complete, here's the game plan for 2008:

Jim Tressel's Ohio State team has lost back-to-back games for the BCS national championship.

We need border patrols along Interstate 10, from Jacksonville to Pensacola. A Coast Guard blockade at Biscayne Bay. And the FAA should redirect all inbound flights to South Florida from Ohio.

If you see a silver helmet and a sweater vest coming, contact authorities.

Because next year's BCS National Championship Game will be played in Miami, and the Ohio State Buckeyes aren't invited. Especially if the Southeastern Conference champion is invited.

If you've ever seen lions maul a water buffalo, you've seen the last two title games. You've seen a fierce pair of SEC teams -- Florida last year, LSU this year -- blow the vulnerable Buckeyes back to the Bratwurst Belt by a combined 41 points. You've seen the best of one league flex, and the best of an inferior league collapse

Last night’s game was much closer than last year’s.

The key was that field goal block, had OSU made that, I think it would have been a much closer game. OSU could run the ball on LSU’s defense at times.

Herbstreit looked pretty rattled last night on ESPN. He’s been carrying the water for a crappy conference since the Mich game (predicting an OSU victory and mocking the SEC’s superior speed) and it all came to a head last night. I almost felt bad for him.

Denial is an awful emotional state.

***“That would be Texas Tech.”

...who scored 10 points in 21 seconds to beat VA in the Gator Bowl. Now THAT was an exciting finish!***

Don’t forget the 30 plus point defecit last year to spank the weak Minn. team from the Big-10 (I know it is redundant to say weak and Big-10).

And, I’m sure that, in addition to sugar plums dancing in their dreams Xmas, Tech fans were wishing for a D-fense. It is their ticket to a BCS game.

That’s funny. What was Arkansas ranked in the SEC? I don’t think the matchup was fair at all to a very talented Missouri team. (even Bama beat Arkansas this year.)

Agreed! But please note the new recruits when sign-up occurs. A lot of H.S. blue chips are signing with THE U, because they like H.Coach Randy Shannon. It may take a year but check out the new crop in spring practice. A bunch are signing from “Miama” Northwest HS.

Well said.

USC was one of the best teams at year’s end..no doubt about it..but the Ill game cannot be used as a measure. People did the same with Georgia...no doubt Georgia was one of the better teams at year’s end, BUT Hawaii at 12-0 was in a weak conference and made Georgia look better than they really are:

(Hawaii beat Nevada by 2 points, and Nevada was beaten in the bowl game by New Mexico State 23-0)Hawaii beat Louisiana Tech by 1 point in overtime, yet the match makers and many pundits were suggesting that the Hawaii - Georgia game was going to be a must see match up...I humbly predicted that Georgia would kill them...and they did...not because Georgia is great, but because Hawaii is not.

And until Oregon lost their QB to injury they were a tough team as well.

Hey, it’s football and injuries to players are a part of the story but maybe people should quit the trash talking like their team is all that when they have not lost a starting QB or try to evaluate a team like USC or Oregon against opponents when they were not at full strength. I am not saying that USC blows out LSU but LSU lost a few games with their 1st string playing.

The Pac 10 had good teams this year. USC and Oregon were top ranked until QB injuries knocked them down.

Having good depth is critical to winning a championship. The teams with the best 1 through 22 players will not win a championships unless they have capable backups.

***It looked pretty good last year, didn’t it?***

Not really. OU seems to enjoy an annual BCS meltdown. Let the WAC Smurfs play one of the other teams last year and you would have had another UGA v. Hawaii.

Bottom line: actually play a schedule if you want serious consideration and respect.

***Those who are advocating the elimination of the two-team rule aren’t clearly thinking through the results.***

The selection is suppose to be about BCS placement, not the name of the school. That is why Hawaii got invited when they had no business in a BCS bowl. Mizzou, ranked 6th (if I remember) before the bowl selection was NOT invited when they should have been. Let Hawaii or Ill go to a different bowl. Mizzou’s only crime: 2 losses to the SAME team. Obviously, they didn’t match well against OU, but they handed Kansas a spanking who did go and were ranked lower in the final poll.

The key was that field goal block, had OSU made that, I think it would have been a much closer game.

Even more so was the dropped TD pass the play before the blocked FG. Would the TD have made a difference? Maybe, maybe with the score then 17-10 Wells gets 30 carries in the game and OSU's running game would have had a chance to grind. Or maybe not and LSU just out coaches OSU and still wins going away.

I think even if OSU made that FG momentum has already swung to LSU and the score would have soon been 17-13.

I am not sure which game you are speaking of, but shouldn’t a great team be able to beat a 41 point underdog with their second and third string QB?

Shouldn’t they have beaten Oregon?

You think they would have learned after the first loss how to beat OU the second time around.

In addition, it’s hard to justify a team playing for the National Championship if they can’t even win their own conference. Maybe if Missouri was a one loss team you could make a case, but two losses no way.

If Missouri took care of their business, they would have been in the national championship picture. Simple as that. Both Ohio State and LSU backed into the National Championship game - nobody is arguing that point. Every team in front of them was given a fair shot to solidify their chance, they just couldn’t get the job done.

If Missouri/USC/OU/ won the game they needed to win, LSU fans would have nothing to complain about

Herbstreit should be fired. He put out the story tht Les Miles was going to Michigan right before the SEC championship game. He wont name his source. It was a lie.

Okay, so you have shown that you don’t understand the college game. The starter is the guy who gets the snaps. He knows the offense better than anyone. Take him out and the back up struggles, especially a freshman/red shirt player. However, look at the jumps these kids make year to year and someone who struggles early goes on to become a stud their 3rd year.

And, while you are on the subject at SC, their tail backs are so deep that all of them can start for just about any other Division 1A program in the country. Their defense is as fast as anything you will see in the SEC and they recruit in a huge area. They are sending lots of kids into the pros.

The selection is suppose to be about BCS placement, not the name of the school.

But it's not about that--it's about filling seats for the bowls. Remember, the individual bowls select the participants, and they select who they think will be the best team for their individual bowl. You are confused in thinking that the BCS is designed to create attractive bowl matchups. It's not. That's not what it's there for--it's supposed to create a good national title game. That's it. The rest of the bowls are on their own.

Hey, all teams have bad games. And, WTF comes up with 41 point spreads?

Do you know anything about Oregon?

That game was a failure by the coaches. You don’t leave the QB in to throw passes with a broken hand. But, the way Sanchez played when he got a turn maybe they had no choice. USC didn’t have enough depth at QB this year.

However, without a playoff it’s real hard to say what would happen.
