Well, in a few hours, a few LSU folks will recall with dread the name Greg Frey. Yep, the Buckeye quarterback no one remembers but die-hard Buckeye and LSU fans. The quarterback who led the team to one of the most spectacular comebacks ever witnessed at Ohio Stadium.
As Wikipedia puts it: On September 24, 1988, he rallied Ohio State from a 33-20 deficit in the final four minutes for a 36-33 victory over the ninth-ranked LSU Tigers.
I was at that game in the shoe, urging all the fans who were leaving early to stay put. It was gratifying to see them pour back in as the miracle comeback unfolded. When Bobby Olive made that flying catch in the end zone for the win, I distinctly remember sharing overwhelmingly jubilant joy with thousands of other Buckeyes around me.
The LSU fans who shuffled back to their cars were morose indeed .... it's a long long drive to Louisiana from Ohio. These same fans are now hoping for a dose of that gloom to be heaped upon the carloads of Bucknuts on their way back home from the Dome tonight.
I have some advice for Tiger fans: don't buy the extra beer for the party after the game. The spirit of Greg Frey is with us still.
OSU over Tigers, 24-21.
The last drive made it clear...whoever picked these refs should be embarrasesd. “Roughing” followed by a chickenbleep personal foul. It calls into question the fact that LSU just got their first penalty. Bullclinton.
Three of our other children were born just down the street from the site of last year’s game-changing performance winner. That would be Bryant-Denny Stadium. :-) I think the Prothro catch is better than this year’s winner.
Knowshon Moreno is back as #1 and we have a freshman King that is already #2 RB. It’s on!!! GOOO DAWGS!!!!!!
I don’t hate OSU. I hate bad football games and matchups.
Pretty much all the Bowl games have sucked. I am actually rooting for the Buckeyes to come back and make this a game, thats all. ;)
Hold the phone!!! INT OSU.
Could we have a game?
Only if he goes in a twofer with Teabow.
Good—lets see a close game, thats all I want.
UH OH we may have been shoveling dirt on the corpse too early.
4th down OSU, they need the TD.
HUGE defensive stand by LSU! This is the play of the game coming up
OOOOOooo and we return 17 od 22 starters.
TD Ohio State!!!
TD BUCKEYES! Don’t leave the stadium quite yet.
Good. I hope OSU does an on side kick and recovers-—lets go!
OSU now needs to force a three-and-out, to keep the momentum.
Would have been nice to see a little playoff betwixt Georgia, LSU, USC and W V. this yr.
Penn State not big ten.
