After losing big in the Sugar Bowl, the University of Hawaii may be dealing with a much more important loss.

June Jones, who has been the Warriors' coach since 1999, has resigned, according to a report by The Honolulu Advertiser.

The report says that Jones told his close friend, Al Souza, of his decision Saturday morning. He cited lack of loyalty and commitment from the athletic department as reasons for his resignation, the report says.

Looks like Hawaii could not match the SMU offer.

He is a great coach— He will now go to a real school for $1.5 million. Good move June.

He will probably take the SMU job, but I would not rule out a return to the NFL as an Offensive Coordinator or possibly as a HC.

Jones took over a program that was 0-11, and made them 9-4 the next year and has made Hawaii a TON of coin and now they are stiffing him.

He single handily brought 10s of millions of $ to the school making 800k. He deserves to be paid.

It's not Hawaii but East Carolina that took Boise State to the woodshed in the Hawaii Bowl. Interesting how bowl games work ... mainland teams go to Hawaii to play in their bowl game ... Hawaii travels to the mainland to play in their bowl game. Not sure Al Gore would approve ...

As an SMU alum who was there during the Pony Express days, I hope you're right. I'm not sure anyway can recruit football players at SMU these days given their weak, spread out league.

During the broadcast, the announcers talked about how crummy his office was, and how he didn’t have a recruiting budget that would get him to the mainland.

Let’s face it, Hawaii was playing out of its league at the Sugar Bowl, and if folks in Hawaii started giving him a hard time about the loss, I can see a reasonable reaction being that they weren’t paying him enough to take that grief.

He should end up with a better gig (but probably not better weather) at a second tier program on the mainland.

Boise State was certainly in a transition mode with Zabranksy gone and Tharpe as a 1 year starter. The team also had pretty much freshman wide outs this year.

Recruiting has been good with a stud QB from Washington in the wings and the two freshman RB's that are wicked good. Supposedly, there is dynamite wrecking ball running back who ran on the scout team that just beat the defense to death. Add this guy to a senior Johnson and the other stud they have and it should be a fun year next year.

Not sure how the defense will be though. Losing a couple good guys up front and Tadman in the d-backfield.

I don't get the move.

I understand that Jones deserves to get paid, but SMU? They've been on hard times ever since the NCAA put the Death Penalty on them, something the Mustangs have yet to recover from.
