BLAIRSVILLE, Georgia (CNN) -- The person of interest in the disappearance of a hiker in the north Georgia mountains is in custody and is being questioned by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, police announced Friday evening.
Gary Michael Hilton, 61, was detained after a police officer spotted his van at a convenience store.
Investigators also have another piece of the puzzle: Meredith Emerson's black Labrador retriever, Ella, who walked into a grocery store Friday. The animal was positively identified through an embedded microchip.
The search for Emerson will continue Saturday.

How many of us would be afraid of a 61 year old toothless man (Im 61 and have dentures ;-))? Guard down, perhaps?
*snort*
maybe
LOL!
The use of a dog to distract the victim is a common one with pedophiles.
Salient points:
She was over 21 (pedophilia not an issue)
The dog was hers.
But I understand your premise. ;-)
The dog belonged to the woman...she was hiking with the dog.
My husband was coming home from my son’s basketball game & said he saw a Channel 2 film crew. It looked as if the camera was pointed towards the Kroger at Exit 17 on 400.
Makes sense because 400 is the most logical route from the N GA Mountains to the area around Ashford-Dunwoody. We don’t get too many WSB crews up here in North Forsyth unless something really big happens.
My best guess is he let the dog out or he stopped and the dog jumped out.
Either way, it does not look good for the poor young woman. (I hope to God I am wrong)
Especially with the severe cold we have been having for the last few weeks.
Even if there wasn’t foul play, I don’t see how she could survive the cold.
is there snow where she was hiking?
In a real fight with a man I've NEVER met a woman I couldn't beat to death. Not with a baton, hands, pugil sticks, anything.
Your nephew that you say is big didn't fight the female cop. He put it in his brain that he didn't want to go to jail forever if he stomped this cops brains out.
I met and went to the ground with a female MP/instructor that challenged our class with the same bs. I've got news for you. A real fight and a fight in a ring, mat, television show or movie aren't even close to the same things.
All real fights in close quarters end up on the deck in less that 30 seconds. You end up with eye gouges, throat thumbing, biting of the face and ear and anything else, small joint dislocations then just elbows, knees, head butting and scrambling.
When I was young and much dumber, I liked to fight. The myth of female "karate experts" throwing kicks and disabling a big dude is a death myth.
I've got three daughters that have been shown to kick, bite, scratch and RUN...after doing everything in their power to avoid a man getting a hold on them. They all know about the true equalizer.... 38 caliber S&W. No spray, no whistle, no dog, no tazer.... lead that expands is the way to go.
As far as a 6 foot whatever inches nephew that works as a bouncer and gets his butt handed to him by a woman with a side-handle baton or expandable ASP.... geez, what a puss. How does he do against men that are really violent in the club? Usually a sober bouncer and his 4-5 bouncer brothers will crush a drunk, but ya gotta think the guy can hold his own in a throw down. May I recommend some mixed martial arts or grappling like judo or jujitsu for the next fight with a 5'4" female. You'd think with his reach, he'd be able to jab or kick her 4-5 times before she was able to lock him down.
It did snow on New Year’s Eve, enough to dust the porch where I live but Blood Mountain is a much higher elevation. I heard on the news that Clayton, not too far from there, had a couple of inches. But it has been in the teens at night, bitterly cold.
and a knife or a gun beats the best martial arts practitioner every time (except in the movies)
I guess I asked because if she is dead it won’t be as hard to find her if there isn’t snow. I’d rather hope for a miracle.
his nephew had enough sense not to do what you just posted to cop, male or female.
I shop at the Kroger and get my gas at the QT!
I missed the news conference-husband is watching the Golf Channel & I am too lazy to unplug the laptop & go upstairs.
Does not look good.
Damn, it was a beautiful day after all of that rain (NOT complaining, we needed it and more). A perfect day to load the dog into the car, ride up to N GA and hike a bit.
So sad.
So saith the God of confrontation. So saith the mensa of bodily contact. All hail to ye.
Nothing more needs to be said on the subject.
Only if they are caught unawares. Which might be the case here?
I spent years in martial arts, and anyone who is serious will tell you a weapon will beat you every time, unless you are extremely lucky.
I also don’t doubt she was caught unaware.
