Okay, I think I’ve probably asked this before...
My daffodils and tulips did not fare well this year. I don’t know if they’re overcrowded or if I have a critter problem. I do know that I’ve still got moles/voles in the yard and we have lots of squirrels.
I figure my options are:
1) Dig them all up and replant them in the fall. Not my favorite option.
2) Mulch really well and mark where nothing came up. Replant there in the fall. I’m thinking I could mulch around what came up (and did or didn’t bloom) and put in something like golf tees that would mark where I could plan in the fall.
Which option is best? and,
If I go with option one, when can/should I dig them up?
Discuss.
I reccomend option 1... cuz it involves more werk fer yuh...
I’d go with mulching them and marking them. Could be they’re just late coming up, too. My daffodils and hyacinth have about 1-1/2” of green shoots coming out of the ground, but I’ve never noted when I’ve seen them in past years, so I don’t know if they’re early, late, or what. I’m not much of a gardener. ;o)
I think you can dig them up once the leaves have died back for the year. But don't quote me on that.
As far as whether to dig them or not - why not take a sample and see what they look like. Have they been gnawed on? Do they look puny and malnourished? That would save you from digging the whole bed if you didn't need to.
