The Hobbit Hole XXXV - ...is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

Posted on 01/03/2008 6:35:58 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

That’s a really good sized mole. Kudos to the feral kitties.

Same here, looking forward to your thoughts and musings on the Crescent City. It’s been years since I’ve been there, we still have a good sized contingent deployed down there.

pass by a fairly new "old folks" home. What are circling overhead but six turkey vultures, wth! Gave me a start, I'll tell you that.

Yikes! That coulda given the old folks a scare, huh?

Y'all had snow? Wow it was 72 here this afternoon! We did some more work outside. SirKit cranked up Gimli to back-fill the holes for the posts we poured this last week. He was just finishing up when he started getting pelted with big fat raindrops. He and Joseph got the tarp over the posts and dirt, then came in to eat. Ten minutes later the sun came back out. Oh well.

I spent time shoveling the rest of the gravel for the foundation posts from the pile into buckets, and concrete from the bags into smaller containers. We already had some sand that we had taken from the trailer and put into a container It will be easier to weigh out the ingredients from the smaller containers.

It's fun mixing the concrete in the little 3 cu. ft. mixer, but we've found that a 2 cu. ft. amount is easier to manage. The posts hold about 2-3/4 cu. ft., so we have to do it in 2 batches, but having everything already measured out makes a big difference. SirKit created a spreadsheet for how much of each ingredient to use for different sized batches, so I can just follow the recipe when he tells me how much he needs. He rigged up a water meter on the hose, so I can keep track of how much water I've put in to make sure I don't get it too wet, and without having to guess how much I've put in each time. Makes it really easy for me to do the grunt work, so he can do the smart work. ;o)

Oh - nice temp. We’re supposed to have that warm spell next week.

Just got back from gypsy’s walk and it was brisk, the wind is steady from the north. I can’t figure out how it seems to be blowing at us no matter which way we walk. :-)

Gimli and your mixmaster sound like very handy items. The deck sounds like it is coming along.

It WILL come along as soon as we get all the posts done. We have two more to pour, then we can start setting the support beams and joists. It’s supposed to be nice for several days in a row next week, so we’ll be able to get that going. SirKit is building it so that it doesn’t attach to a board that’s on the house. He’s going to offset it a inch to allow snow and water to drain down and not build up so much by the doors, but connect it to the house with concrete anchors.

There was just an itty-bitty white pony / mini horse over at the store just now, with an equally itty-bitty cart. Did you see it?

Very cute...and I was kind of astounded by how it was just standing there while folks walked by and pulled up to the pumps and all. Unflappable little thing.

He lives just on the other side of our pasture. We’ve seen them trot by on the road before... it usually creates quite a stir with the horses, but they’re in the back forty and I don’t think they saw it!

Ah...now that I think about it, you’ve mentioned him before. I guess I’d just never seen him up close, especially with the cart and all!

The jam was fun. Did a tiny bit more playing, and now have a few folks who I know I can talk to, so it wasn’t as scary as last time.

It was also my first time taking thenewlittlecar on a long stretch of fairly open interstate. The main trouble with it is that it’s as quiet and smooth at, say, 80 or more as it is at 50. Very unlike the van in that respect. They told me not to use cruise for the first few thousand miles, but I can see I’m gonna wanna use it as soon as I’m allowed if I do any long trips..,

Is it nice out or what?

She had on her helmet, and got right back on to ride back to the house. It didn’t scare her one bit.

I was envying the folks at the jam who had sandals. The grange hall where they host it is under the trees and wasn’t too terribly hot, but heavy shoes are evil when it’s even kind of warm.

I wish I didn’t have such ugly toeses...

Mrsnad - tell thegirl she done good, climb right back on; someone once told me “There isn’t a rider that can’t be throwed, there isn’t a horse that can’t be rode”.

G’nad - front loader does make a world of difference, doesn’t it. Next time we’re on theRidge, you’ll have to show it off; yer operatin’ skilz as well. :-)
