The Hobbit Hole XXXV - ...is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

Posted on 01/03/2008 6:35:58 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

...I’m mostly fretting about getting out on those back roads with folks behind me who know exactly where they’re going and don’t have patience for anyone who doesn’t. I *hate* that...

Yeah, me too. I used to pull off somewhere and let them pass, but then I got to where I figured that it was THEIR problem, not mine, that they wanted to faster than I was going, so now I just ignore them.

It might help if you could take some tools with you, like an adjustable wrench or some kind of pliers, and maybe a screwdriver, just in case it won't fit in Vansama without being taken apart. And it wouldn't hurt to take a flashlight too. Maybe you can borrow this stuff off of somebody at work?

*snort* We do the same.

I can probably at least bring a screwdriver and pliers. And hope for the best. I think it’ll fit on its side...and hopefully the gal is willing and able to help me fit it in.

One more hour before I set off into the night! It’s going to be soooo nifty if this works out - I’ll actually have a kitchen workspace! And a reading/writing space, if I want one. The desk where the computer sits is pretty full, and also very uneven on top. I don’t think it’d handle a typewriter well, but a table should...and there’s a light right overhead.

I *try* to have that attitude, but it really stresses me out!

It was worse with the Corolla...something about that car made trucks tailgate like crazy...and it was so low to the ground that even when they *weren’t* tailgating, it felt like they were. And I wouldn’t be able to see when folks followed that close as their lights came straight in on me. It was scary. The van is much better in that respect...

Oh yeah, a van is much more calming for driving than a little car. I really enjoy driving SirKit’s BigA$$ Ford Crew Cab F250. Hardly anyone ever tailgates him, though he still gets annoyed drivers behind him. He just chuckles if they start blowing their horns, then takes his sweet time. ;o)

Now... this is pretty funny. Terrific potential for fun and hijinks... such as sending them pictures of him in compromising situations...

The Lacey Police Department has found a low-maintenance approach to speed enforcement: a mannequin dressed as a patrol officer placed behind the wheel of a parked cruiser. (Steve Bloom/The Olympian)

Be careful with kerosene heat indoors... that’s the reason dad got us a generator, he was afraid of me buying an open flame heater to use inside. You don’t have to wire the house to use a generator, you can plug in a space heater to the generator directly with an extension cord. Also means you can get by with a smaller more affordable unit than a whole-house unit would cost.

I want to lose weight.... sixty pounds in six months. I think that’s doable... But I haven’t gotten the best start.

I have to do better. Bay’s another year older, I can’t keep getting heavier and expect him to carry me around.

You can do it. What you have to do is figure out the best plan for you. Don’t think of it as dieting as much as adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Of course I’m saying that like I’ve actually done it...

Didn’t get lost...much...but dang it’s nasty out there. And there are the usual idiots who think that the speed limit is a challenge, even in wet, foggy weather. There was a guy off the road over near Lattin’s, car partially suspended off a bank. Kind of cool, since it wasn’t me and didn’t look like anyone was hurt...

And now I know how to get to some back rural area of Ranier. Or something. I think. It was wayyyyy out there.

And I has a table...but I think I’ll hold off on unloading it until tomorrow. Probably take the chairs out when I have light and then get the table tomorrow evening or over the weekend. Maybe I can con some neighbors into helping. ;-) It’s pretty awkward and hefty.

Then I got this today in my email from my Medical Reserve Corps. Perfect!

Let us know what you learn. A lot of folks here have their own special idea of what "survival kits" should have. My own favorite is a number of specialized "mini kits".

Please be careful with any indoor combustion. More people die from carbon monoxide than freezing to death in the home. Burst pipes are your most immediate danger, as long as everyone has enough clothes and food to avoid hypothermia.

One alternative (or really, "redundant source") are survival candles. I love redundancy because it lets me pick and choose what seems best in a particular situation.

Another item to consider is a propane-fired catalytic heater. These are flameless, and intended for use inside tents. They're also certified as no-carbon-monoxide for use in enclosed areas, although I'd try for a tiny bit of ventilation. They use one-pound disposable propane tanks, or the larger ones have a hose to connect to a barbecue-type tank.

In any case, you might want to consider some CO detector badges at about $5 each, since they don't need electric power.

Heh...

However, the Corolla was a blast to drive on curvy roads. And it could park *anywhere*. I was reminded tonight of how NOT fun it is to drive a van on curvy roads. Especially unfamiliar curvy roads. Scawy.

I figure I’ll hope we have some dry times over the next little bit. Even a window of an hour or two...

It’s really soggy tonight, though. And dark. I no longer have any outdoor light at all.

Now for food...Cisco’s been fed and is settled under the desk with his bone, poor patient soul, but I’m STARVING.

Yeah - I’m kindof hoping your landlord fixes his outdoor lighting issues soon... we sortof depend on those big mercury vapor lights too for just enough light to not be stumbling.

What happened to your outside lights? Are they just burnt out?

The light by the door has never worked. Wiring, I think. The other at the end of the building on the end by the coffee shop may be just burned out. It’s one of those things I never ever think about when it’s light out. Of course.

Another thing I should really do this weekend.

But that big light out back of the store was usually my main source of at least enough light to lock the gate by. Wish it’d get fixed.
