Dolphins Name Jeff Ireland General Manager
Miami Dolphins.com ^ | 1-2-08

Posted on 01/02/2008 1:24:00 PM PST by Dysart

The Miami Dolphins today named Jeff Ireland as their new general manager, effective immediately. Ireland joins the Dolphins after a seven-year stint with the Dallas Cowboys, including the past three as the team’s Vice President of College and Pro Scouting. In fact, of the 53 players on the current Cowboys team, which went 13-3 and won the NFC East in 2007, 38 were acquired over the last three years, including 12 of the club’s 22 starters.

“I am excited about joining the Dolphins as their general manager,” Ireland said. “I know the great tradition of the team, and in my mind they are one of the flagship franchises in the NFL. They have a great owner in Wayne Huizenga, who I know is committed to making the Dolphins into winners once again. I am looking forward to working with him and everyone else in Miami to achieve that goal.

Dallas just signed Patrick Crayton. I hope they sign Marion the Barbarian.

My guess is that Julius Jones will be a Dolphin next year, maybe Terry Glen as well.

Actually, the Redskin Cheerleaders aren’t bad looking. I think I would not turn down a date with any NFL cheerleader. In Fact, the Eagles have two Chemical Engineers on the squad who went to NC State.

Unless Parcells has some familiarity with Cam, and I don't know that he does, he's gone.

They have a connection through Bobby Knight. I don't know if that's enough, but I don't feel that the team is 1-15 because of Cameron. 99% of Dolfans disagree with me on that.

I don’t see Julius Jones as an upgrade to Jesse Chatman. Chatman proved a lot to me this year, and I wanted him cut in favor of Patrick Cobbs, who pretty much disappeared this year when he was given a chance to shine due to injuries.

Barber ain’t leaving Dallas.

Julius Jones was partially ruined by Parcells who changed his running style and destroyed his confidence. (Also, he bulked up too much after his rookie yr, reducing his speed and agility). I don’t think Parcells will have have him and Jones was the most vocal anit-Parcells voice round here when he departed. JJ will leave; I expect him to land elsewhere.

T Glenn may or may not be done after this yr—he had that surgery option that allowed him to return this yr specifically so he could potentially win a SB.

I’d hope Parcells would trade for Bobby Carpenter and maybe Fasano. Throw in Akin Ayodele and Rowdy. It’s only fair.

I don't follow the team that closely but Miami's problems appear to be 1) FO mismanagement 2) glaring lack of play makers 3)lack of stability/leadership at QB. Tuna will bring in a trusted veteran here whether they believe in Beck or not. Count on it. (There may indeed be a Testasaurus sighting in the very near future in S FL...j/k)

Parcells and the guys he surrounds himself with will remedy these deficiencies, turning the entire Dolphins club around-- they'll probably be very competitive by the end of yr 2 heading into the 3rd season.

Problems one, two, and three can all be blamed on one man: Dave Wannstedt.

Jamar Fletcher over Drew Brees? Sure, why not?

Trent Green hitting free agency. Dave’s response? “What can Trent do that Jay Fiedler can’t?”

Wannstedt is the core of this team’s problems, and Cameron is apparently about to fall on the sword for having the balls to coach a team that had to be blown up. Mueller and Cameron began the process, cut or traded players who had prohibitive salary cap impacts (that’s why Chambers was traded), and freed up an enormous amount of cap room.

And now Bill Parcells is about to benefit from the groundwork CamMul, as us Dolfans have nicknamed the duo, have laid.

Take Rowdy, please. The most ridiculous mascot in all of sports.

Colts had a cheerleader who was a Sergeant in the Army National Guard, and several who had science-type degrees. I can’t speak for the current crop, but am available for up-close and personal research (if only they were willing).

I thought Jerry blocked Sparano from taking any other positions last year. When Garrett was hired, Sparano's role was shifted.

Anyway Tony is pretty good, if he and Bill get along, it might be a good fit for the Fins. Thanks for the update!

According to the draft experts, Dallas is looking at Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas and Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State or amybe even Reggie Smith, CB, Oklahoma.

Well I definitely hear a lot of talk about Felix Jones late in the 1st to pair w/ Barber. Jerry Jones said regarding this draft that he wants a play maker. DeSean Jackson would be nice too, anticipating the departure of TG either next yr or thereafter; he's just likely not attainable barring a trade up. Oh, and don't forget

The secondary will need to be upgraded next yr so I wouldn't be surprised to see some help added there.

Seems that they're pretty happy with the OL and that includes the depth. I'd be surprised to see them draft another OL before round 5. With Parcells gone, a TE likely isn't in the cards for once! I like both Peyton Hillis (AR) and this Owen Schmidt of WV who could be weapons (see playmakers) at FB...a resurrected breed in these times which has seen the near extinction of the position. Plus both block well and would facilitate an effective running game. The guy they have now is just that-- a guy.

As a Dolphin fan, I am excited about this. As a Texan, I am also hearing the Jason Garett rumors. I will take a wait-and-see approach on that one, but I don’t think I’d mind that move either. And Garrett, being one-year removed from Miami, wouldn’t mind returning, IMO.

You should be excited as a Dolphin fan. A recently underachieving, and let's face it, dreadful franchise has now committed to winning.

I'm a little concerned you're correct about Garrett and his feelings re Miami. Not a bad place to live I'd reckon. This should all be resolved fairly quickly; no later than Super Bowl wkend and prob sooner.

I agree with you. I don’t completely blame Cameron. However, I am not so sure he will be the one to turn things around. And this may be the perfect opportunity to start over fresh. Then again, hindsight is 20/20 and if we do get rid of Cam, I will probably be complaining a year from now when Bill Cowher comes out of “retirement” and we miss the opportunity on him. Overall, I am pleased that Parcells is on board and hopeful that things will turn around soon.

What's the word on Ronnie Brown?

And btw, I too blame Wannstedt for most of this mess, but I also like to reserve a goodly portion of the blame for two more individuals-- Ricky and Nicky. While their decisions/actions didn't have the long-lasting impact that some of Dave's decisions did, they certainly gave this team a few sucker punches over the last couple of years.

Ronnie’s rehab is ahead of schedule. At this rate he’ll be 100% by training camp.

Ricky and Nicky are indeed partly to blame, but not nearly as much as Dave “I’ll take Jamar Fletcher over Drew Brees”/”What can Trent Green do that Jay Fiedler can’t?” Wannstedt.
