Tiger tragedy brothers' 'don't talk' pact
NY Daily News ^ | 12/28/07 | Tamer El-Ghobashy, Soo Youn and Leo Standora

The anguished brother of a teen who died trying to save two buddies from a tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo struggled Friday to understand why the survivors ran out on their mortally injured friend.

"If he stepped in for you, why did you leave him to die?" asked 17-year-old Carlos Sousa's brother, Leo, 21.

He said his family has been looking for answers since the 350-pound tiger got loose on Christmas and mauled Carlos.

By all accounts, the youth was killed trying to get the big cat away from brothers Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, and Amritpal, 19.

But Leo Sousa said his family's calls to the Dhaliwal family have gone unanswered.

The brothers, who aren't saying much to investigators, could be released from San Francisco General Hospital today

That's a good question. It appears they have been interviewed by investigators, but are not talking to reporters or the family of the dead teen. I do not know. There could be a myriad of reasons ranging from shock, guilt, lawyering up, you name it. It's pure speculation at this point. The truth will eventually come out. Just like the truth of the inadequacy of the tigers' pen.

I'll add a few more possible reasons--Their story is marketable; they're facing a court date unrelated to this; potential lawsuit vs the Zoo...

Well, that’s a good find, LibWhacker, but I view the point about using a cell phone that late in the time line as poor judjgement when in a panic mode. The brothers ran to the cafe where at least one was knocking and screaming for help. That dispatch came in at 5:07 from a cafe worker. Maybe they forgot they had a cell phone? You don’t wait 14 minutes to call for help when you’ve been jumped by a tiger unless you’re half out of your mind.

I didn’t know it occurred after hours. I’d heard references to the time, but didn’t know.
Once again, it’s the ones left behind that suffer the foolishness of these dummies.

Those are possibilities, as well.

Cowards just the same.

You don't know anyone who is a Sikh, obviously.

You are also likely correct, but there is much more to this story that needs to be heard.

Because they are not talking means nothing. Other than useless speculation is given freedom to run wild.

Possibly they had committed some crime - such as wanted to let the tiger escape, harassed the tiger, tried to kill the tiger, gang initiation. That they refused to even give the name of their dying companion showed they are lowlifes.

You don’t use phones when you’re running for your life looking for an escape or a means to defend yourself. ONce the threat is gone, then you use a phone.

Exactly. Generally not wise to invest too heavily in a story that cites ‘by all accounts’ and ‘a law enforcement source’ for foundation.

I still say I don’t care if they threw the kitchen sink over the wall, the tiger should NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE to get out. If the survivors teased the tiger they should be punished and the zoo should be punished for not erring on the side of keeping animals in.

he was specifically following and chasing these three

Do believe the cops said they tracked their path from where they were bleeding. Game, killer cat always attacks the injured first.

I hope you are right, but I’m not so sure that the truth will come out. From all I see so far, the cover-up is already in place.

You don't know much about surnames, do you?

Never claimed to be any sort of expert, oh keeper of great knowledge, which is why I phrased that the way that I did.

Victims are the new heroes. Cowards are the new victims.

Gotta figure Oprah and Montel are scrambling trying to get the first interviews.

You don’t use phones when you’re running for your life looking for an escape or a means to defend yourself.

They weren't running for their lives; there was no immediate threat. The tiger was occupied with Souza. They ran to the cafeteria 300 yards away, leaving him alone.

How long does it take for a 20-year-old guy to run 300 yards nowadays, anyway? Even these slackers should've been able to do it in a minute. When I was in track and field, I could've done it much faster than that. It was only 20 minutes or so later that they decided to call 911. And they weren't concerned about Souza, whom they knew had been mauled by the tiger, when they did it. Scumbags, pure and simple.

But... who am I to condemn them? We're all PC toasty now and don't dare suggest the gene pool would be better off without their contributions.

So... May these lovelies live long and prosper, and seed the gene pool with ten million descendants exactly like them... Until Americans finally wake up and aren't so afraid to call a spade a spade.

I think I wouldn’t have called the cops at all. The zoo should have people there that can handle these animals. I would’ve been trying to get the zoo people, not the cops. The zoo people are closer.

If there was no immedieate threat, then why were these two injured?
