Tiger tragedy brothers' 'don't talk' pact

The anguished brother of a teen who died trying to save two buddies from a tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo struggled Friday to understand why the survivors ran out on their mortally injured friend.

"If he stepped in for you, why did you leave him to die?" asked 17-year-old Carlos Sousa's brother, Leo, 21.

He said his family has been looking for answers since the 350-pound tiger got loose on Christmas and mauled Carlos.

By all accounts, the youth was killed trying to get the big cat away from brothers Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, and Amritpal, 19.

But Leo Sousa said his family's calls to the Dhaliwal family have gone unanswered.

The brothers, who aren't saying much to investigators, could be released from San Francisco General Hospital today

Seems to me this is just a bunch of dumb kids goofing around. They didn’t count on tigers jumping really high.

What I don’t understand, though, is if the tiger used the one boy’s leg as a kind of rope ladder to climb out, how the heck did the kid keep from falling in with a 350 lb cat hanging from his leg?

I’d have to see pics of the enclosure to fully grasp it. But I’m wondering if the dead kid was an idiot that went into the cat enclosure on a dare. THen he got hurt. The two buddies outside the cage begin to throw rocks and sticks to distract the tiger long enough for the hurt boy to get hauled out of the pen by his buddies. The tiger becomes so enraged when his prey is stolen from him that he leaps like he’s never leaped before and makes it up and over the wall in hot pursuit of his prey. Outside the tiger pen, the two boys put up a very short and very feeble resistance to keep the tiger off their hurt buddy. But the tiger isn't having any of it. IT's his prey and he's keeping it. A couple of very small "warning" nips and swipes at the two boys and they run for their lives.

Here ya go, that’s my theory.

The fact that two of the boys are of ethnicities that have histories with wild tigers(india), and the third is the dead one that does not, makes this even more suspicious. I can imagine an argument about just how dangerous a tiger really is and the non indian kid decides he can prove the two indian boys he's not afraid of no silly cat. Then the trip to the zoo is hatched and the stupid stunt that got him killed.

They ran away and left Sousa to die. Did they even bother to call 911 for him?

Anyway, how dare I suggest we’d be better off without them. I apologize.

In another development, Sousa’s father alleged Paul Dhaliwal lied about his son’s whereabouts that day. Sousa’s family was worried when he failed to turn up Christmas morning to open presents and began calling friends to find out where he may be.

The elder Sousa had called Paul Dhaliwal around 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. Christmas Day — just an hour or two before the tiger attacks. He wanted his son home to celebrate Christmas with his mother.

But Dhaliwal reportedly told Sousa he hadn’t seen his son for days.

“We’re just so upset about that,” said the victim’s cousin, Christina Sousa-Habenicht, 26.

Paul Dhaliwal was arrested for being drunk in public on March 24 after being seen allegedly drinking beer and smoking marijuana at an In-N-Out Burger on Capitol Expressway. He was sentenced to attend 10 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

On Sept. 7, Paul and Kulbir Dhaliwal were arrested on charges of public drunkenness. Paul Dhaliwal was also charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest. They have a Jan. 15 court date.

Correct, my husband works with a very nice man from India and they do not trust and deeply dislike the Muslims there. He said that “they will shake with one hand and stab you in the back with the other” and “smile while doing it”.

Possible payback for the Arrests.
I know that from others, that any arrest and spending a night in jail, can have a profound change in your life. It changes your opinion about Government in general. Especially when it was for minor matters, or one thinks: "I have done nothing wrong, why do they do that."

“This whole thing stinks like day old fish in the sun!”

You have that right. Especially when you visit Carlos’ MySpace account and get a taste of what he was all about. Says he made $75,000.00 to $100,000.00 a year.

A tragedy for the tiger.

According to this article, yes they ran to the cafe where they had previously been and banged on the door (which was locked) screaming for help. It was a cafe worker who made the intial call, but there was so much chaos, precious moments were wasted. Police, fire logs in S.F. tiger mauling show scene of chaos, delay

It also appears the zoo's emergency plan wasn't well implemented. Zoo workers did not announce tiger escape, failed to follow rules

Man, I have to tell you. If a tiger started to come across the moat or at the wall while I was around...well, I would not be around. I’d be SO gone, but I would take my friends with me.

The person who called these two boys from INDIA a couple of “muzzie cowards” is now questioning MY manners?

At first I thought you were simply a bigot.

Now I question your intelligence.

With friends like the Dhaliwals, you don’t need any enemies.

They are worthless trash.

You know, your theory makes perfect sense to me. I never thought of one going in and others trying to distract the tiger. Or some kind of initiation where one goes in. That would explain them not talking too.

“Have never read that where is the link to the bystanders statement that had the cat pass him up.”

No specific statements, but considering that the tiger followed the three guys to the cafeteria, one can infer that there must have been other people in the tiger’s path, whom he did NOT attack — he was specifically following and chasing these three.

There seems to be a whole lot of inferring going on. I have not been able to find any reports that other people were passed by the tiger. The two men that survived went to the cafeteria where they had previously been, looking for help. It was after closing time. The cafe was locked. A cafe worker called 911 but thought the guys were crazy, until he saw one bleeding. The tiger simply followed the blood trail.

I have not seen any reporting that the cafe worker let the brothers into the locked enclosure. Since the tiger continued mauling them outside the cafe, and the police eventually shot the tiger outside the cafe, I think he left them outside.

Why are the two guys refusing to talk and tell what really happened?

You are the bully.

You claim that these boys must be ‘muzzie cowards’ and that people who disagree with you are wife beaters.

You keep sinking lower with every post.

Thanks. Couldn't help but notice this:
At 5:21, dispatchers fielded a cell phone call from Amritpal Dhaliwal and then a land line call in which dispatchers instructed him how to control his brother's bleeding. The line went dead at 5:23 p.m.
It rather confirms my suspicions; i.e., it appears they had a cell phone with them but didn't have the decency to call 911 for Souza. Amritpal only called them for his brother a full 20 minutes after Sousa was attacked.

That's a good question. It appears they have been interviewed by investigators, but are not talking to reporters or the family of the dead teen. I do not know. There could be a myriad of reasons ranging from shock, guilt, lawyering up, you name it. It's pure speculation at this point. The truth will eventually come out. Just like the truth of the inadequacy of the tigers' pen.

It is sad that the two men or their families have not corresponded with the dead teen's family. However, zoo officials have not corresponded with the dead teen's family, either. I find that even more sad.

The first thing that got me thinking this way was that the whole incident occurred after hours. If I was going to pull a stunt with a tiger at a zoo, I’d wait around until they are asking people to “please leave”. THen when the crowds are all gone and there are no witnesses to get me arrested, I’d go for it. Also, 350 lbs sounds kinda small for a tiger to me. So maybe they picked out the smallest one for their stunt and convinced themselves that they were being “safe”. And never occurred to them that the smallest one might be the one with the most impressive jumping ability.

I’m just trying to put my self in the mind of a stupid punk kid. It’s not too hard since I was one once, a long long time ago in a land far away. I never cooked up something as retarded as dancing with a tiger though. Thank goodness.
