I’m currently thinking the same this that the Cuban posted. The concept, organ donation, is a worthy cause. But, I no longer have trust in the system. I may be changing my status to no for organ donation. The system is broken and needs to be fixed.

I revoked my organ donor designation on my Delaware DL about 8 years ago following the death of a close friend. He and I were the same age and he was in perfect health, a former Army Ranger, a black belt, avid bicyclist, all around physically fit guy, and an organ donor.

But he was a smoker and all organs except his corneas were deemed unsuitable just because he smoked, no other reason. He was a week sort of 39 years old and had slipped geting out of the shower and hit his head on the bathroom sink with such force the sink was dislodged from the wall. His girlfriend found him, still alive the next morning. He lingered for a week before we lost him.

Between that experience and the fact that in many places smokers are denied transplants, I am no longer comfortable with being a donor and did not sign up for it when I got my Virginia DL. My family knows my wishes.
