Jodie Foster comes out... finally
The notoriously private Oscar-winning actress has acknowledged her lesbian partner in public for the first time
Veronica Schmidt
After guarding her private life fiercely for 15 years, Hollywood actress Jodie Foster has publicly acknowledged her lesbian partner.
The Oscar-winning actress thanked "my beautiful Cydney" after winning an award at the Women in Entertainment Power 100 breakfast in Los Angeles.
She went on to praise Cydney Bernard, saying the film producer "sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss".
Despite more than a decade of speculation, questions over the paternity of her two sons and critics calling for her be out and proud, Foster has refused to discuss her sexuality.
The 44-year-old maintained her silence when, earlier this year, gay American magazine Out put a picture of her on its cover above the words The glass closet why the stars wont come out and play. Inside, it was argued the stars arent willing to make the jump to being officially labelled queer and all that it represents in the business.
Now that Foster has, reactions are mixed. On American website Gay.com, readers posted comments praising the actress for coming out, while others expressed anger that it was considered news.
It is her life to live as she pleases. Why do so many gays worry about who is and who is not gay? asked one reader
Whether or not Jodie comes out is definitely her own decision, but she would provide an excellent positive role model to GLBT [gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender] people everywhere. I think that is why we get excited when someone comes out, posted another.
Foster is one of only a few Hollywood actresses to have publicly acknowledged they are lesbian. Comedian Ellen de Generes made headlines when she came out in 1997, as did her partner Portia de Rossi when she was photographed kissing then girlfriend Francesca Gregorini in 2001.
Foster reportedly met Bernard on the set of Sommersby in 1993. The actress later gave birth to sons Charles, 9, and Kit, 6.
The actress found world-wide fame at 14, playing a prostitute opposite Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver before going on to star in Bugsy Malone, Freaky Friday, The Silence of the Lambs and Nell.
Her latest movie Nims Island is due for release in May next year.
“sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss”.
Jody Foster always looked like she stunk of BO... and she finally admits it in this phrase.
She played a cop or agent of some kind but she played it very soft. Her voice was entirely different. She sounded feminine. She looked softer too.
Maybe thats what the director wanted from her. But I wonder, in retrospect now, if she did it because she was planning on coming out and wanted to show that she did have the ability to look and sound very feminine.
I really loved that movie. I completely freaked out when I saw who the director was: Spike Lee! It was a total departure for him. My only complaint about the movie was that I felt that he was trying to get a look and feel of another movie, "The Usual Suspects." I don't know why exactly, I just got that feeling. Maybe it was the music.
I never realized just how important a director is to an actor's role since the Star Wars prequels. Lucas had some pretty good actors in Neeson, McGregor, and Portman, and they were really awful, especially Natalie Portman. Anyway, I thought that Spike Lee did a terrific job with Jodie Foster: I thought that he wanted to accentuate her feminine side to bring out just how manipulating and ruthless she a lawyer - or fixer - she could be... Remember how easily she was able to control the mayor of NYC.
And, as I mentioned before, she was really hot in that movie!

I suppose that would explain it.
That's not an answer. A good many lesbians are neither hot nor sexy. And yes, as a woman, i know which women are sexy and which ones aren't. It's something women know. It's what we do. It's our business to know these things.
OTOH, we also know which men are sexy and which ones aren't. That is our business in an even bigger way. For instance, i'd bet at least 80% of the women you ask about Johnny Depps hotness factor will say, yes, he's hot. There's very little disagreement among women on that one. But i don't suppose you'd feel comfortable going around asking ten women "Do you think Johnny Depp is sexy?". You'd probably get some raised eyebrows. So we'll never know if i'm right or wrong. This knowledge is from my own personal experience. My girlfriend told me she feels a bit freaked out cuz her mom and her daughter also think Johnny Depp is hot and so does she. She thinks there is something very wrong about that.

Better photos, from "Inside Man."

I really liked the movie too. Didn’t know Spike Lee directed it. So not his style of movie. He makes good movies when there isn’t too much of the racial white vs black angle. Yes, he has done some that just focus on the hardships black people face and those are the good ones. This is the first one i know of that wasn’t primarily a “black” movie from him.
I couldn’t compare it to The Usual Suspects because as many times as i’ve seen it, i don’t think i’ve ever seen it all the way thru. Usually fall asleep watching movies. Nothing against that one personally. I’ve wanted to see it because i think Kevin Spacey (another one that needs to exit the closet) is a great actor.
And yes, you’ve mentioned that Jodie was hot in that movie. I would venture a guess that you think Jodie was hot in nearly every movie she’s ever made.
Have you see the Brave One yet? I haven’t. Waiting for it to come on ON DEMAND. Is it good? I know Jodie was hot it in, but was it a good movie?
I agree, her mouth is huge, but worse is her nasally voice.
So the homosexuals often say - then demand that we not only accept but rejoice in their perversion through gay 'pride' parades and so on.
Why do so many gays worry about who is and who is not gay? asked one reader
Because they are desparately trying to make themselves feel better about doing what they know is wrong.
My first thought also!

What's next, Al Gore is a tree?
Wow, I thought I was the only one who didn’t think Julia Roberts was attractive.
My pet name for her is “Clownmouth”. The last time she was even remotely pretty was in “Mystic Pizza” and that was almost 20 years ago.
Overrated and unwatchable.
Oh, yeah, I’d hit it.
She hasn’t made anything I’ve liked in a long time. Not since, Little Man Tate and Contact.
Maybe they’re not making good movies anymore...
I laughed when I read this. You had to identify "Cat" twice by name or else suffer an incredible ambiguity.
Ewww, Jodi! You can do a hell of alot better than that!

1. You missed the obligatory photo when mentioning CZJ.
2. This thread is hereby detoxified.
