Not at all, a question is not an attack. But when someone call the Mormons a “Cult” then this is an attack.
Would you feel better if we use ‘antithetical-to-Christianity religion called Mormonism’? Or do you just insist ALL religions be tolerated regardless of how antithetical?
What if it an opinion?
People have called my church a "cult" and quite frankly I am not offended. I think it is funny. The fact is that to your typical Mainline Presbyterian, I'm sure they would think that our church has all the earmarks of a cult.
The Mormon Church has generally been referred to as a "cult" by nearly all Mainline Christian Denominations since 1830. The problem that we have today (and it permeates our politically correct society) is that people are now able to squelch free speech by simply feigning "offense" at someone's characterization of their belief system or lifestyle or sex orientation or whatever the offense de jeur is at the time.
I find it quite disconcerting that the Mormons on this forum are so "offended" everytime someone suggests that they don't believe that Mormons are "Christians." So rather than air the issue out and bring out the definitions and argue the ideas, the LDS Posters simply cry "Anti-Mormon Bigot" and free speech gets squelched in the name of political correctness.
Personally I don't usually refer to Mormonism as a "cult". That is probably a word which these days causes some people to just freak out. Nevertheless, I grew up in a Mormon Church and most of my relatives are Mormons. They are, by and large, nice people. But that does not undo the fact that IMHO they are all mixed up in a rather secretive and authoritarian religious "cult".
If you read the posts here carefully, I think you will find that most of the "hate" expressed by freepers here is directed at those (like me) who are simply trying to air out some of the rather bizzarre and unique doctrines, rituals and practices of the Mormon Church which set it apart from Mainstream Christianity.
So if guys like me get banned for asking pointed questions and making legitimate points about the beliefs and practices of the person who very well may be the next president of the United States, then how is free speech and liberty and truth benefited?
J, your moniker on this forum is Latin for Truth. You don't advance the cause of truth by squelching dissent and by allowing groups of people to stifle free speech on the altar of political correctness.
I have been called an Anti-Mormon Bigot and an Anti-Mormon Jihadist on this forum more times than I can count. I laugh it off.
So check the posts and see who's giving the venom and who is receiving it. I know that I have received much more than I gave. Maybe I deserved it. Who knows. I do know I've ruffled a few feathers, so I suspect that people are going to take their venom out on me. Cest la Vie. People sometimes ruffle my feathers. So what. I'm not trying to stifle the Mormon's opinions of me or my church. But I don't think I can say the same for many of them nor many of their defenders here.
These issues need to be aired out. If we go into this election with our heads buried in the sand because we fear that we might offend someone, then we are going to be disappointed when Hillary and company take advantage of that fact and Hillary ends up being cast as the REAL Evangelical Christian in this upcoming election.
I'm probably going to vote for Romney in the general election, because he is probably going to win the nomination. But I'm not going to be ignorant of what his beliefs and practices are when I go into that voting booth. I took GWB's "born again" Christianity into consideration when I voted for him in the primaries and the general. I have every right to take Romney's Mormonism into account in voting against him in the primaries and reluctantly voting for him in the general. Frankly, having grown up in the Mormon Church, I would prefer a "Jack Mormon" to a "Good Mormon" as my president. Unfortunately Jack Mormon isn't running.
How about the Moonies? Are they a cult?
Is it an attack to call them so?
What about the Pagans? Cult or no?
Why should Mormons be exempt from cult status?
