When I was a really young feller I worked ranches all across the west. The one condition that my parents placed on me for hanging out with the rough crowd was that I attend church services at least once a week. Saturday night I would wash out my britches and shirt in the bathtub at some seedy motel and scrape as much cowcrap off my boots as I could and look up the nearest church in the phone book.

Sunday morning I would slick back my hair and hie myself thither. I didn't care what denomination it was as long as it had good Christian fellowship. Like as not, in the small towns, it was a Mormon (LDS) church. Sure, I would cock an eyebrow at some of the doctrine and hope that there wasn't the smell of stale whiskey on my breath but I was always recieved warmly and made to feel welcome.

As time went on I began to seek out the Mormons. I shared most of their values. I met some crooked ones and some good ones but no more of either than I would find in a Baptist or other church. I'm still not Mormon and don't hope to be but I am not going to challenge their doctrine. It works for them and that's good enough for me.

"Working" during life on earth and working in the afterlife are two different things. Interesting story you had, BTW.
